Why Do I Need A Vent With A Coal Fire??

Hi, I have just had cavity wall insulation and in my front room, I had to have a vent fitted because I have an open coal fire? Obviously you have to have one with a gas fire but WHY a coal fire? I would have thought the chimney was a vent - the contractors could not give me a direct answer just saying i had to have one?............Thanks

By "Vent", do you mean airbrick? If so, it's called "supplying oxygen to the fire without sucking it out of the room and endangering yourself in the process"..:)

Because it is burning the same oxygen that you are breathing.

And you want to make sure that both of you get your fair share!

Succinctly put Eliteheat.
The vent should ideally be at low level, close to the fire. So as to make the flow of air as near to where it is required as possible. This will help prevent unwanted draughts.
