Army Pension

Can anyone help me understand the ARMY pension scheme, I was discharged from the forces in 2001 on a medical discharge and was subsequently given a war pension(50% disabled) and non taxable service pension.

I have been advised that the service pension is indexed linked and payable at the age of 55, currently aged 49. My question is how do i know what pension i will be getting at aged 55 and how does index linking work, any advice would be appreciated.

But please make it easy to understand as my brain is a bit damaged.

  • Hi Thunderpants,

Get in touch with the Army's Pension Dept and ask them for a Statement of Entitlement (which you should have received upon cessation of service - as this is normal practise).

I would expect it to show your pension benefits at the date you ceased to be classed as an active member of the scheme (I am presuming here that you are in fact deemed to have ceased to be an active member).

A current Statement of Entitlement may show your pension benefits as they stand now, rather than as they were previously.

Index linking is one method of granting increases to your pension. Pension increases granted to pensions in payment are referred to as escalation, and where the pension is index linked, the pension will receive an annual increase equivalent to the increase in the Retail Price Index (RPI).

I am sorry to hear of your circumstances.

You might want to have a look on the board further down 'For Who You Are and Where You Are' (or something like that); it has a section on UK army money matters.
