Privilege is the same company as Direct Line, Churchill + some others.

So if you think those companies are good quality, then go for Privilege if they're coming out the cheapest.

    see directlinegroup.co.uk/our-brands/brands.aspx

    from wikipedia

    Operations[edit]
The Group owns a number of general insurance brands operating within the United Kingdom, Italy and Germany primarily, including Direct Line, Churchill, Privilege and Green Flag.

Direct Line is a company that specialises in selling insurance and other financial services, sold directly to consumers by telephone and the internet .It was the first telephone insurer in the United Kingdom, when launched by founder Peter Wood in 1985.[13] In October 2012, it became one of the main operating businesses of Direct Line Group, when that company floated on the London Stock Exchange.[7] The firm is known in the United Kingdom for its distinctive logo, a red telephone on wheels, used extensively in its marketing. It operates in various overseas countries, including Japan (in partnership with Yasuda Life)[14] and Spain (partnership with Bankinter).

Time running out till I must renew but I'm still no wiser.
I wrote this in my first post " I went to public library today to see the on-line Which reports, but system was down; there was a small section in a recent Which magazine. Cheapest Moneysupermarket quote was Privilege. Now, Which seemed to rate them well, but an on-line check of reviews of Privilege was not encouraging.
I'll have to wait to see the full on-line Which reports.
Others that were a good price that Which rated were Halifax, LV, Tesco, Saga , LLoyds Bank."

But on-line Which did not rate Privilege highly; Halifax was average.
I was considering Saga; it is pretty good on Which but is slated on Review Centre http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews84858.html
Review Centre seem to like Policy expert but I didnt see them on Which . And is Review Centre accurate? http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews264344.html

Any comments (other than I must be an obsessive:mad:)

An hour later . have just phoned Policy Expert. Trees- moneysupermarket asks if there are any trees within 5m of your home. Policy Expert say this mean 5m from the property boundary, the garden wall.

ps 3 hours later, just looked at online Which; Policy Expert is not listed.

Had a renewal quote which was £26 higher than last year. Same company.
Looked at Moneysupermarket and the quote with the same company was £3 higher than last year.
Other quotes from LV, AXA were £20 lower than last year and nearly £50 lower than this year's quote.
Called my Home Insurance company and they after some pointless discussion matched last year's quote and included free Legal expenses.

Insurance is a game whichever company you go with and that's why it's no point me naming my insurance company because whoever I was with would try the same tricks.

But it catches people out as it has done the OP.
You just have to check yearly and decide after that.
It's your money. Except if it's the governments.

I looked more carefully at Policy Expert on review centre, at the one star results. I get the impression that the company is easy to set up insurance, but not so good at settling claims.

So I'm looking again at the Which report list; Think I'll just go with Barclays or Saga. I'm not looking for the cheapest.
It does feel like a lottery

    do a moneysupermarket run.
defaqto star-ratings/home-insurance seem good for ratings

I would forget Defaqto. There are nothing more than an advertising agency. They are not even regulated to be able to give an opinion. Shame really as the idea of someone being able to pick a policy based on real benefits is fab. Shame, a real wasted opportunity.

I would stick to Which? Far more open and far more realistic. Also impartial.

I work in a form of insurance ish. We have never heard anything but good things about Saga, LV and NFU. Not to say that there are not other good ones but I know I insure my home with one of them.
Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A

Defaqto seem to be star ratings like for hotels; does it have pool. garage etc.
I have always looked at Which, but had a thought this morning; how many people nowadays subscribe to which. It cant be that many. So how accurate are they (Ithink their ratings are for quality of claim handling).

    Thanks.

I didnt include the Which reports that didnt come out well. These included some very well known companies, including ones that were cheapest on moneysupermarket.
