Dettol anti-mould and mildew spray works well, but there comes a point where you just have to remove the mouldy sealant and apply it again! Going forward try and keep the areas dry and as well ventilated as possible.

My mum has the same problem in her shower room. When she had it fitted, the man who fitted it warned her about the black stains - he said it would grow UNDER the sealant, so no cleaners would be able to get to it. He said it was due to the protein and other things in toiletries like shampoo and shower gel.

Don't think that'll be much help to you, just thought I'd chip in with some info.

My experience is that the mould in bathroom sealant does not go away, even with the strongest bleach. It seems to sit IN the material rather than on its surface. The best and easiest way to avoid mould growth is to wipe the corners of the bath tub dry after each shower/bath. Mould always needs warmth and moisture, so if one of the two is missing, it can't grow.

Agree with the others ~ it does seem to grow inside the sealant.

I'm sure you can get sealant with anti-mould in it ~ I haven't tried it yet though.

I gave up on sealant ages ago.

I have a special sticky back bath seal strip like the one in the link, though I couldn't find the one I have, and for belt and braces put some aquarium sealant in the join before sticking this seal down.

    Zero leaks.

    Zero mold.

I use Astonish Mould & Mildew remover for bathrooms. It costs a £1 in savers and it really does work. I had horrible black mould growing on the sealant in my shower and this stuff really does get rid. I also use it on the ceiling sometimes when that goes grey and it brings it up a treat.

Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.

I resealed around our bath the day before yesterday. It was such an easy job I"m sorry I hadn't done it sooner. It was certainly simpler than the cleaning I'd been doing weekly with a toothbrush. I just had to cut the old out, clean it all off and with a tube of silicon sealant squeeze around smoothing as I went.

Did the kitchen too from the one tube, it was a mould resistant sealant too. Looks a treat and cost less than a fiver.

I have to agree,I always wipe dry every time ,and have never had mould in 36 years.

what do you use to clean the area when you remove the old sealant. In the US they use alcohol, but what would be the same here? would white spirit be the same?

I use methylated spirit to clean before re-sealing but you must check any painted surfaces first as it can strip it :o
