High MPG Car for ~£1,500

I realise my options are limited but I need something that does decent MPG for under £2k.
I do 30k a year and need a stop gap car for a few months, 60 MPG plus is what I am looking for.
Short list so far includes
Renault Clio 1.5 TD, a few around my budget that look OK.
Citroen C2/C3 - C2 probably a bit small though.
Peugeot, a few variants there., 207 for example.
Yes, a lot of French stuff, not too impressive but it only has to do me 6 months as I should be getting a bit of cash when some shares mature. If it lasts longer then that's a bonus.
There's also a couple of Kia Rios.
Anything I've missed and any tips?
Cheers.

I bought a C3 diesel last April,05 plate with 170k on clock for £500 with years Mot.its never missed a beat and gets around 60mpg,plenty power from the 1.4 engine, maybe I was lucky!0

i have a clio dci (05 plate) with 220k on the clock also never missed a beat and that is also having major abused it by not regularly servicing it, yes its as rough as a tractor but gets me from a to b cheaplyDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
2k budget?
Buy this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201411179036755/sort/pricedesc/make/ford/fuel-type/diesel/radius/200/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/model/mondeo/price-to/1000/usedcars/postcode/ng348nh/page/1?logcode=p or similar for 1k and bank the other thousand for any repairs etc you may need.
Worry free bangernomics.
Oh and it would be a lot comfier than any of those little things your looking at for doing 30k mikes a year in.0 -
Focussing on headline MPG, especially on low value cars, is just daft, and ignores a large part of the real cost of motoring.
Get the BEST CONDITION car you can in your budget, and don't sweat a couple of headline MPG difference. Large maintenance and repair bills will quickly dwarf a small cost-per-mile saving.
60mpg @ £1.25 = 9.4p/mile
50mpg @ £1.25 = 11.2p/mile
Less than 2p/mile. £540/year on 30k, so only £270 on your expected six month stop-gap. That's a couple of hours labour plus some parts.0 -
How about something like this, a touch of luxury

Can a 1.3 cdti corsa be had for under £2k?
Nippy little thing with silly mpg.0 -
If you can find a a good clio they do OK we have one but watch for the leaky sunroof they could have dodgy electrics water runs into dash area.
would not be wanting to do 600miles a week in a small car
Second vote for the VAG 1.9
a good Superb comfortable motoring but probably 50mpg.0 -
I went for Passat tdi, but that won't do 60mpg+.
Be ideal for those miles, wouldn't fancy it in a corsa or similar.0 -
Just bought a 205k miles, 1.6 CRDi Kia Cee'd for £1700. On the road home at motorway speeds, the on board computer was saying 55 MPG.0
