Paying your own NI Stamp

Hi All

Does anyone now how and how much it is to pay your own NI stamp?

Currently DH is signing on for his NI stamp only. The good ol JCP is giving him hassle as he starts a College course next Wednesday for 16 weeks and Wednesday is the day he signs on. First they said he wouldn't be able to look for work as he is at College for one day out of 7 (yes to better himself) and they were reluctant to change the time and/or day to sign on. He gently explained that he's not saying he won't come in but cannot on his usual day and time due to going to College. He spends a fair amount each day 7 days a week looking for work but this apparently isn't good enough! :mad: He is tempted to say :mad: you sign off and pay his own stamp.

Any help much appreciated as always

You can pay Voluntary Contributions.

Always make sure your stamp is fully paid up. Get a pension forecast regularly and keep it - forever.

The mess-ups in the NI office are unbelieveable, so you will always need proof of your entitlements.

Before making any decision check what benefits are covered by NI credits and voluntary contributions. Apart from being a lot more expensive I do not think that the voluntary contributions give you as much benefit cover.

i know they are giving him hassle, but whilst he is still on their books he has access to extra help as well as still getting his NI stamp.

such as funding for travel to interviews, interview clothes, etc etc. plus he may be entitled to extra help when he does get a job when he signs off.

he is perfectly entitled to do extra study whilst he is signing, as long as it doesnt go over 16 hours and he takes his learning agreement in which will show what hours he does, unfortunately the day he needs to sign on is prob tied to his NI number, but hopefully you can sort something with them.

He needs to dispute his JSAG and change the pattern of availabiity to Thursday to Tuesday

Unless he's likely to have fewer than 30 years of NICs paid or credited this really doesn't matter for pension purposes.

Paying a Class 3 voluntary NIC is about £7+pw and only covers for State Pension. As mentioned earlier, I would also suggest removing Wed from the JSA agreement and continuing to sign on the get the Class 1 NIC credit which goes towards ALL future NIC benefits.

Which day and week you sign on is dictated by your national insurance number, i.e if you should sign on a tuesday but couldnt and signed on a monday it won't input the evidence onto the system. Sign on the wednesday though and it wil go on.

All he needs to do is complete the education or training form and arrange with the JCP is to arrange a late sign on for the following day. This can be done as regular for the duration of the course though he may have to book the next each appointment each time he signs on.

He'll need a learning agreement as well as something from the college stating whether its a fulltime course as well as its duration.
