BMW 320d engine in need of rebuild- not sure what to do, advice much appreciated :)
Apologies if I'm asking a lot of questions in this thread but I'm in a dilemma but I'm not sure what to do so thought this was the best place to ask.
ive had my BMW 320d (57 plate) for 18 months. A week or so ago I noticed a strong vibration so took it to local garage. He told me after doing diagnostics dpf was blocked and two injectors were playing up. Dpf in particular puzzled me as only had it unblocked 6 months ago. I was then told to do a long run to hopefully unblock dpf and then injectors would be sorted. After this my car lost all power and I had to leave it stranded at petrol station whilst I was at work, it was ok a few hours later and managed to get it back to garage. It's been there since Wednesday. Garage owner has always said it may be a long job as he wasn't sure what problem was and after a few days of waiting for him to look he told me tonight that it's not good news. Compression is down in engine and it will need engine rebuild.
I am am going to speak to him again tomorrow to speak about how much it could potentially cost but can anyone tell me how much these engine rebuilds tend to cost? And in all honesty is this repair even worth doing? I've decided I'm going to sell the car anyway tbh. It's slowly getting problem after problem and I'm ready to get a nice new lease car that I know I can rely on. but I'm not sure whether to sell the car as it is for parts or get it repaired and then sold. Car had been valued online for about £4000 in working condition but how much would I expect a fawlty car to sell for?
My final question is would it be worth getting a second opinion? I've used this garage once or twice before but wouldn't say I overly know them well although they haven't charged me a penny for diagnostics and checks which I like. However owner seems to keep changing his story on what the issue is and I'm starting to have my doubts especially as it's such an expensive job and he doesn't seem to be in any sort of hurry to get the job done. Is it worth getting a second opinion? I know there's a couple of BMW specialists nearby so not sure if there worth visiting.

I'd get a second opinion, and a second quote.
You'll be in to a small fortune getting an engine rebuild done. Apart from anything, it would be prudent to check and probably replace the clutch and given they're prone to timing chain problems, i'd do the chain and tensioner while i was there.
I remember getting a quote for a simple 1.6 Zafira engine rebuild and it was around £800 basic - and that was before they found other issues, and then all the labour for removal, stripping the ancilliaries, transporting, picking up, rebuiling the anciliiaries to the engine and refitting.
And even then you could put it all back together again and it not run right. You could still have turbo problems or DPF problems or injector problems or pump problems.
I'd have thought £2,000-£4,000 is the right ballpark for the work.
Another option might be a "good" used engine, but that could be hard to find and confirm.
I would personally think about ebaying it as is and selling as spares or repairs.0 -

If it was a snapped timing chain, it wouldn't have started up again.
Go to a diesel specialist for a diagnosis and ask their advice on repair. If it's going to need a new engine, you may as well eBay it and let someone with contacts in the motor trade sort it out.0 -
I've been offered £2700 part exchange by ford on personal contract purchase on a Ford Fiesta. Amazed that was offered that much but hey ho.
Have done another thread about it but I'm now bricking it about credit checks. My credit score has been poor in past but my experian score is now 826 with 5 positives and 0 negatives. Is this likely to get me accepted? All seems a bit too good to be true0 -
A DPF at almost 9 years old is getting beyond the life expectancy.
When you last had it 'cleaned' I suspect the clean removed recent soot, but no cleaning system would remove the ash which would have been baked rock hard in the honeycomb filter.
In the last 6 months more soot has been desposited, more ash has been created and that has lead to your problem. A blocked DPF is the equivalent of stuffing a potato down the exhaust and expecting the car to run.
A new DPF would have been a wiser investment.0
