Its extremely expensive to run and would bring higher bills, the far east use it as oil is something silly like 10p a litre, but its something that may well happen if the drought continues or becomes more common

I was meaning more along the lines of why aren't we, as a country, utilising it.
It isn't like we have a massive abundance of coast line or anything.... :o

There is a desalination plant in the Thames now, but it only used at times of dire need due to the prohibitive cost of running it. I believe it IS currently in use.

why is there not more man made lakes or reservoirs in england.

There has often been a hose pipe ban in england.
England have enough rainfall just not enough storage.

Can't remember the last time we had a hose pipe ban in scotland.
I am sure scotland sent a few tankards down to england when i was a kid.

They cost money. Land has a very high value.

Would you like your water bills to double so you can avoid a hose pipe ban? I wouldn't.

It would cost many millions of pounds to take that land out of use then build and maintain a reservoir. They are not small they take up many acres of land. At £10,000 a square acre for excellent quality land located in a valley next to a river for the size of my local small reservoir would cost about £23million. Then the cost of the dam wall and associated works itself which took 500 men 6 years to build. You can much make more out of land for crops rather than storing water on it.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember that water companies sold some reservoirs they had to developers in order to get their greedy mitts on more cash?

A drought has just been called in my region, but typically, we've had more rain so far April this year than last. (Mention drought and it always rains!)

You can see from the graphs on my weather station page: www.wsmweather.co.uk (Not commercial, it's a hobby site / home weather station) that the winter was particualrly dry in this region though and that last years rainfall was way below average - it is the lack of long term rainfall that is catching up with us now.
