Why do we fall? To learn to pick ourselves back up. (£26K+ DEBT!)

Hello. MSE. Once again. I am here, to share my journey and find support and inspiration in you fellow moneysavers.

My old debt diary: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=5055456

Here's a mini breakdown of where I am right now:
  • £20,000 business loan debt; up to date
  • £4500 MBNA debt; defaulted
  • £2000 Barclaycard debt; defaulted
  • Currently unemployed and seeking

A short story is that I was in good employment over a year ago and had disposable income to start bringing down my debts so it was just a matter of time. But I felt severely unhappy in my line of work, and it affecting my health. So I quit. And over the next year I obtained a business loan to try and create my own business, and it was unsuccessful in the financial sense.

But I have learned a lot about myself, and about business. I will continue to progress at working for myself as this is where I think I will be happiest, but right now I clearly have significant debts and I need to dedicate the next year+ to sorting them out.

So right now I'm seeking new employment. I know my worth better these days than I once did, and will be looking for a good pay cheque. Don't get my wrong, I'll be taking any half decent employment I can get but will be on the constant lookout for very well paid opportunities.

In many ways I feel upset and drained and foolish from letting myself get here. But I know I did it to try and make a new life for myself and make my own riches because I work very hard at things and often felt jobs I have had didn't give me the recurrence for my efforts. But perhaps that is partially the naive youth in me.

Whatever my mood and emotion, the situation I am in is prevalent; and it needs dealing with. I can no longer allow my impatience to rule me, and instead need to commit to this process of financial freedom so I can live life without any chains as I have always wished. I've wasted my mid twenties focused on debt but then being impatient and not making long term progress... well no more I say. No more.

Here we go savers, let's do this.

So last night I downloaded and registered for the Moneybox app (moneyboxapp.com)

It's designed to help you put money aside into a savings & investments ISA. It does things like rounds up pennies and takes the difference and put into the ISA, you can also add extra money onto that too.

I've set it up to take money each week, and I plan to at the end of every month take whatever money is saved up and then throw it at one of my debts.

I feel like this could be a neat way of me a) saving without noticing it b) consistently having money aside to throw at said debt c) get used to the habit of having these extra money taken and put aside so I don't need to think about it much myself.

    Hey man!

So sorry to hear about what you’ve been going through. I know too well that a job can get you feeling so awful and miserable that it does feel hopeless. Sorry to hear about the business too, it happens all too frequently… In terms of your defaulted balances, have you spoken to the lenders to arrange a payment plan or are you going to try and lump sum satisfy them?

Are you on any benefits etc. whilst you’re looking to help tide you over?

I thoroughly recommend https://www.usertesting.com if you need to make some extra cash, it’s legitimate and pays out in to paypal. If you’re twiddling your thumbs it’s a good way to make some living money (I often do it if I have a big bill to pay that I wasn’t expecting etc.), if you can get accepted to be a mobile tester too you get a higher fee per test and they send you a high quality and expensive camera to film the tests with. It’s a bit awkward doing it at first but now I find them easy. Just means you need the website open to listen out for the tests when they come up.

I also recommend https://www.consumerpulse.co.uk if you can sign up and get accepted as a member. It’s such a quick way to earn vouchers, it’s not like these other swagbuck type things where you spend hour and hours for a £5 voucher. I make about £200 in high street vouchers a year from it!

Are you still renting or are you living with friends/family atm?

I can, sorta. It's complicated a bit because I have my finances then my biz still has some money left in it and the finances for that side of things are completely separate so bear in mind the Biz loan repayments are being paid for by whatever is left of the biz loan itself - but it wont last much longer.

Hey sauce, thanks for dropping in. Thanks for your kind words.

So MBNA and Barclaycard have been aware for a few months now that I am not earning so therefore I cannot pay them. MBNA agreed £0, and Barclaycard agreed £1; however this does not stop them from adding defaults on my credit and Bcard have already done that and MBNA probably as well soon.

I've actually been on benefits for the last year on something called a "startup year" when basically they give you a break to give you time to get off the ground but that hasn't happened so I think a bit more time and they'll be dropping hard on me. The amount I get affectively pays my rent but living expenses have been coming out of my biz loan to stay afloat.

Thanks for the recommendation, I've just given usertesting a go and sent off the first video that's pretty easy for me and I'm good at web design so I'm sure they'll like having me. I may try out the 2nd one, but I don't actually buy a lot of stuff but will keep it in mind.

I'm still in the same place in London, renting. The rent went up a little bit this year but not too much to whinge about. Like I said my rent is paid for, it's just trying to get enough money to a) eat comfortably b) start paying my debts off and c) maybe enjoy myself once in a while.

This week I need to get my biz finances in order, I just basically need to reconcile all the transactions from recently so I'm ahead with that and my accountant can sort the taxes which will probably be straightforward as I've basically earned zero. It's amusing as HMRC have told me recently I owe them money for one tax year whereas I'm definitely owed tax from the year just gone.
Anyway just need to get on with that whilst applying for jobs.. :o

Forgot to mention also I'm doing a training course to aid my efforts in working for myself again one day, but other than this training course am going to do so in a manner that doesn't cost a lot of money to obtain and sustain customers - which is where I went wrong before. It's something that I hope to be able to do part-time/evening/weekends as its working directly with people, and eventually might mean I can once again return to it full time as I build up a big enough client base. Keep the hope

I know you're not in a position currently to look at how you spend 'extra' cash, but it might be worth examining before you start earning again as often it's the attitude we have towards money that creates debt,
Rather than ' not having enough money '.

hopefully that makes sense, it's something I've had to do (and still struggle to do on a daily basis!

Hey. Absolutely right there, it's the attitude. Too often even when I haven't had money to spend I have spent it.

Recently I've done just that too with my biz loan taking probably more than I should have for my living costs. I worked hard but I could have definitely spent a lot less of it on myself. I didn't go nuts buying clothes (seriously) but mainly eating out a lot, socialising type things. I also have a think about tech, which I need to curb so that would be the main thing I can randomly spend a chunk of money on.
I know it's important to be honest with myself about these things, that way I'll be better about my choices in the future.

Right now I have zero extra cash, it's negative if anything. So I know I need to secure consistent work/income soonish. Even if it's not a whole lot where I'd want to be, I need a starting point. I generally have very low expense, I don't believe you have to spend a lot of money to enjoy yourself/life. So that's a good starting point if I can just curb my few indulgences (tech, eating out/takeaways mainly).

I want to commit to, whatever income I can get, being very strict with myself about how much of it is disposable for myself and what is disposable for debts with a heavy sway towards the latter. I think a common fault with tackling debt that I have had, and many others seem to have, is this thinking that "in 3 months it'll change positively so right now I don't have to tackle it quite so much"... that kind of thinking is what keeps you in debt for years. "When I get that promotion I can tackle it", "when I get that bonus", "as soon as I move to a cheaper place"... the time is NOW!

Went to the sainsbo's to get some food for lunches and couple other bits. Spent £13. Got the cheap laundy detergents for colours and softener; I still have stuff for whites. You gotta do what you gotta do! I'm sure I've used them before too and not had much bother with them, to me if the stuff is washed then it's washed.. I don't own anything that nice anyway that I don't want to ruin.

Going round to my girlfriends later so should just have a chilled eve. In the meantime I have my accounts to do - fun!

Have you considered going to LIDL or ALDI (perhaps there isn’t one nearby)? I spend significantly less on groceries since I got in the habit 2 years ago. Their own brand laundry detergents etc. are also completely fine and sooooo much cheaper than other brands. I buy name brand fabric softener when it is on sale and just use LIDL’s own detergent, washing still smells fab! TBH I find Sainsbury’s horribly expensive!

Hope you had fun with your girlfriend!
