myplanet solar quote Surrey KT22

Sure people like to know this stuff........

Visit from myplanet salesman y'day.

3kw system using German Solarworld tech. Therefore quote was £9k. He pre-empted the 'but I thought systems were now below 7k' by saying a lot of the kit is Chinese and that some inverters have been failing after two years.

Anyway, one phonecall to the manager produced a revised quote of £7200. Don't you just love sales teams.

We are talking again on Monday and expecting to be able to visit a local intallation done by them.

For 3kWp get em down to £5k or less, especially since many/most of those 'cheap' systems will be using quality German inverters. And Euro panels aren't that much more than Chinese.

Maybe specify Chinese kit like YingLi panels and a Samil inverter - low prices and good reputations - see what they say to that! ;)

[Edit: is it 3kWp due to roof size, as YL also produce 'cheap' panels 270W to 285W, so you'd be able to squeeze an extra 12*20W or more on the roof. M.]

  • Yep, 3kw due to roof size (3 bed semi) - 8 panels on south facing and 4 on south/east facing.

Hiya again, sorry to be paranoid, but strongly suggest you ask them to specify their inverter choice (so you can check it) as that mix is going to be interesting.

Unless they plan to use 2 inverters, or individual micro inverters or power optimisers, they'll have to use a single inverter with dual MPPT which will treat the two roofs as separate systems. This is essential, as panels on different orientations all wired into the same MPPT will drag each others performance down.

Nothing wrong whatsoever with a dual MPPT inverter, such as a SMA 3000TL or Samil SR3400TL good systems ..... but ...... 4 panels might struggle to meet the minimum voltage necessary, and really struggle to reach the MPPT voltage for best performance. So a very carefully chosen inverter will be essential. Or the other way around, higher voltage panels specifically chosen.

Lots of solutions, just make sure that your chosen installer's inverter/panel choice is ok. Ask on here, loads of people will be able to help once you have the make/model specifics.
