Car Insurance Cancellation - First 14 days Query

My 17 yr old daughter has just passed her test and taken out insurance with Ingenie. The guy came round a few days ago to fit the black box. We have now discovered her car has an oil leak from engine and is not viable to repair and she has been advised to scrap car. She is understandably upset. She now needs to cancel the insurance, which she paid £240 upfront and is on monthly direct debit. Thing is I'm not sure if she is within the first 14 day cooling off period. It states on f and q's its the latter of when you receive the policy documents or when you take out policy. The policy was purchased online on 3rd Feb but the actual document appeared online dated 13th. Any thoughts appreciated...

  • Well if the documents didn't appear till the 13th that's when the cooling off period started.

When did you ask the Policy to start?

It's either £10 (if before 14 days) or £35 (after 14 days) to cancel with Ingenie looking at their website, so not too bad.

Your problem is going to be once the box is fitted, their Keyfacts document states there is a £165 fee deducted once they have installed the box.

Although the policy started on 3rd Feb and some documents were ready online to download, the actual certificate of insurance (underwritten by Royal & Sun Alliance) is dated 13th and didn't appear online until then.....

That would imply she was not covered for ten days which is slightly worrying. A certificate of insurance isn't like the old days where it would have a wet signature, it will be an instantly generated pdf document - no reason this should take 10 days to appear.

Cold Iron wasn't referring to you, but rather to another person whose posts have now been deleted.
