Dealing with loss adjusters

Hi All,
My astronomical telescope had a bit of an accident and is now so much recyclable glass and metal:(:(. The UK importers and service agent say repairs would cost more than replacement (guess telescope technicians cost lots more here than in Taiwan where it was built!)
On the plus side my home contents insurers say I am covered but that they are passing my case to a loss adjuster to settle. Anyone got any idea what this will involve (have it in writing the scope is trashed, direct replacement available) or any hints how to deal with the loss adjuster?
Thanks
David

It will depend on who they work for- are they independant ones or internal to the insurance company?

All they will do is come out and have a chat with about how it happened etc. Nothing to be worried about at all.
  • The insurance company normally instructs a loss adjuster and pays him.

However, the loss adjuster invariably asserts that he is independent. But he is the agent of the insurer; supposedly he is independent, but few people who have dealt with LA's really believe that.

Thanks folks, the insurers said they were passing it to a company of loss adjusters so I guess the LA will say they are independant but work for who is paying them! Guess it was the rather strange story involving a telescope and refueling the wood burning rayburn that got them to send him!

RSA have their own internal loss adjusters so if they are outsourcing they either have issues with you claim or are simply too busy.

Their main job is to either accept or decline liability for the claim.

Ahh well, the loss adjuster says the person who took my call was wasting his and my time as it was a clear cut accidental damage claim covered by the policy. Just asked me to send them some photos of the damage and forward a copy of the email from the UK importer/service agent that says given the part that I broke the scope is beyond repair, which he said the person I spoke to first should have done. So fingers crosse I should be able to sort a new telescope out soon!

If you use Google Groups and search for them, they seem to produce more horror stories than the norm.

Of course, it could just be embittered people who've had claims turned down........however, when a company employs you for your "specialist skills", they usually lay down guidelines as to what results they expect you to produce.
