we have high gloss white units. they havent got scratched yet. they show all dirt and grime, and need wiping down more than any other units Ive ever had. they show the streaks too. however, they are light and bright and bounce the sun around the room. hope they work out for you.

hi would just say it's down to personal choice there are good points and bad points about gloss and wood, what i would say is when buying your new units if you are getting integrated appliances take note of the appliance make and model and search for best price as some places like HOMEBASE mark up appliances by huge amounts as a example AEG SN718404i fridge/freezer there price £839 i seached the web this site https://www.3pinsappliance.com/cgi/productView.cgi?prodID=785 - 24k - sold it for £504 +£25 delivery.

Hi - I am resurrecting this old thread to ask Indigo if she went for the gloss white in the end and if so what you think? I've got the same dilemma at the moment and would love to know.

I was really surprised when I read this thread from a year ago to hear that white gloss was regarded as dated then. Everyone round here seems to be getting it now. Maybe we're behind the rest of the Country;)
  • Hi there, I'm glad someone else is like me.. I too am looking into changing all my cupboard doors and unit tops and wanted to go for the high gloss but fancied cream not white.

So by the sounds of it, it's ok for cleaning, pretty hard wearing but potentially out of date!!

Also can I ask you all what colour unit tops did you go for if any of you had cream? I've got stainless steel appliances and want to have something dark (like black/dark grey) top but have noticed that wood looks good too but surely that's not as hard wearing and must be treated.

Also, anyone know any good companies that do doors without the whole re-fit??
  • hi there,

My partner Rhona and I have been developing for a while now, but we have come to loggerheads about our latest project.

As with all our projects they are being done up to sell, initially we live in them for a few months before the sale is agreed.

My partner would like to put in the high gloss as she thinks they are "hot right now" and I am more of the opinion we should do the same kitchen but in wood to better suit our target market as I feel gloss is a little more specialist than the wood and a smaller percentage of our market would find them allurring.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Debbie :-)

The 'wood' is fine, if it's what YOU want - but, if it was for not looking dated, in years to come, maybe dark wood will be in, but a light colour, a big no, no.

Same with gloss colours, I think.

We did our first in gloss black, 5 years ago. The second, gloss red 2 years & the current one, gloss white, this year.

All from Ikea, haven't a pic of the black one, but it is discontinued, so maybe they thought it out of fashion - but we'd have bought it agian, probably!!

all the units have lasted well. I do the cleaning in our house, so looking after the finish, is a spray of glass cleaner (5ltrs from local commercial cleaning suppliers £8) & buff with microfibre cloth & it's done!

In each of our installations, wood wasn't even a consideration!
