Tax credits over payment

In May I received a overpayment letter for £214, which I figured OK, with all the unwanted over time, fair enough.
Then my letter for this year came, said I might owe £88 by the end of the year.
Now here's the fun bit, got a letter today saying we owe £1406..... how, I have no idea, in total it's £1620, don't think we got this over 2, quite probably 3 years. No explanation as to why, just, give us money.
How the heck can we suddenly owe roughly 5x what we received last year?
And I thought pay day loan companies ripped you off:undecided

Just make sure you check what they are telling you is right, I have had a recent experience where they have been absolutely abysmal when it comes to knowing whats what.
Just be clear on why you owe the money and which information was wrong , It may be complicated but from my experience it needs checking over.0
