Morning everyone. At last a dry day when I don't have to do paid stuff. The ground is still too wet to cut the grass today but so far I have repotted some of my tomato plants into individual large tubs. They were struggling in the grow bags so I have nothing to lose. Some have fruits on so I'd rather not lose them.

I have also dug a new flower bed. Just need to get planting and put lots of compost on there.

Also beginning to get a handful of strawberries each day, lots of peas and the runner beans are flowering.
Spend less now, work less later.

Went out for the first time in a few days. All the blackcurrants have disappeared and there's evidence of pigeons bouncing up and down on them to get at the fruit. Outdoor courgettes are losing the battle, but indoor ones are still fine. Raspberries are starting to fruit here, again signs of pigeon bounce. Not sure what's happening with my beans, they seem to have stalled...

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

Some of my crops seem to have stalled too, cucumber, beans, courgettes mostly, presume it was down to the cold weather last week.

Potatoes however are coming thick and fast, gave 6lb to family yesterday, still got several more pots of first earlies to harvest

Lots of tomato plants setting fruit now, strawberries have all but finished and I noticed a couple that ripened during the week have been eaten. Been back and forth to my mums all week as she has been very poorly, so the garden was a bit neglected :o

At home all day today, weather looks good so will get a wiggle on and tend to the crops and maybe pot up some bedding plants.

Have a good day all :)
Let's get ready to bumble! :rotfl:

Couldn't sleep so decided to get up and get going a bit early. I think the stalled veggies are down to the extreme weather we've had - I'm sure they'll pick up once things even out a bit. Any yellowing of leaves on curcubits could mean lack of magnesium. I give them a feed of epsoms salts on the leaves.

My sweetcorn seems to have bolted - never had that happen before. I only had a few minutes down at the plot yesterday so I'll take a closer look today when I have a bit more time.

Everything else is doing fine. Lots of raspberries which are delicious, plenty of courgettes and peas and the overwintered onions are all ready to be strung now. Also the green bed is doing well.

I potted on a few more lettuces yesterday and sorted out the July seeds. I really need to get on with the weeding as they are really taking over some of the plots.
    Happy growing.

    Question on onions:

How do you know when they are ready to pull?

Was too bring and sunny for me and my allergy to go up the plot with yesterday. Plus silly dog has cut his pad, so spent all day trying to deal with that, it keeps bleeding on and off despite being a small tiny cut! With any luck, I'll be able to go up the plot by myself this afternoon if it stays this cloudy. My growhouse bits need watering.

I've also scored a wormery for the price of petrol from their house to mine, so thats awesome! Just need to buy some worms for it.I think I'll site that up at the allotment behind the growtunnel as it'll have some shade/wind protection then.

Onions are ready when the green stalk starts folding over.

Mine are all laid on a shelf in greenhouse drying out which was an idea that paid off after the downpours we had last week. :j

could really do with some help with my cucumber. This is the first year I have grown anything and I can't remember what the cucumber variety was. I now have quite a few small cucumbers on it and one largish one at the bottom which I was thinking about harvesting. I just had a look at some youtube videos and am now more confused than ever. I had no idea I needed to identify male and female flowers (I have a lot of flowers). Is it too late for me to pick the males if i can work which they are? I don't want bitter cucumbers but then I've read some varieties need both male and female flowers to be left on. Any advice gratefully received. I can try and take a photo of it if it will help to identify it. It is curling and has sharpish nodules/spikes along it.

It's a nice cool day here in Gloucestershire. Hope it's good where ever you are.

I brought the over-wintered shallots and red onions home last night to dry out under the umbrella. They look pretty good only 4 that need to be used straight away all the other can be plaited. I'll bring the white onions back later in the week. And I dug up the last of the rocket earlies. So on to the charlottes now.

Maisymoo5 it sounds as though you have something like marketmore or masterpiece - both are ridged cus that have little spikes. If they are outside don't worry about them the bees will pollinate them. They only get bitter if you leave them on too long. Do give them a good potash feed every couple of weeks when they start to flower as they use up plenty of energy. Water regularly - the male flowers just fall off and leave the females there. Maybe you are looking at specialist cus on youtube. Picking them small will encourage the plant to keep flowering.

    All the best

thank you so much fruittea. I water them at least once a day and twice on hot days like this. I will harvest the largish one this evening for supper (can't wait - so excited) and will feed them with potash as you recommend. Thank you again.
