Community Nurse in Sussex, £34,500 gross pa, 37.5 hours (paid) plus 5-10hours /week not paid or claimed back - must be owed about 15 years in time! Salary frozen for last 2 years. BSc in Communjty Nursing and nursing qualifications, qualified as a staff nurse 1985 and Community Nurse in 1996.
Cons
Very rare chance of promotion, few opportunities to do any other training apart from compulsory ie. fire lecture, equality and diversity etc
Less and less time nursing, more and more time doing paperwork eg a referral used to be 1 sheet of A4, now it's about 17 and has to be put on the computer, hard copy sent to patient, put in records, sent to central office after being checked by colleague! Time taken in total can be 2-5 hours depending on the complexity of the situation/patient.
No proper breaks, often dehydrated and needing a wee! Have developed good bladder control over the years ( should I put that in the pros?)
40p a mile for petrol/wear and tear, hasn't gone up in years.
Have had sleepless nights worrying about patients
Stressful and full on most of the time
More important to record data than visit patients
Pros
33 days holiday plus BH- have to save 5 days leave in case the children are unwell
contributory final salary pension scheme 6% - couldn't be described as gold plated!
Great colleagues
Can go to childrens Christmas play.......but can feel guilty if it's commented on.
Can get a few discounts with local businesses
6 months sick pay
Can retire at 55 - lots of colleagues have retired and returned to work for 2-3 days a week as they can't manage on the pension
On the whole, it's a rewarding job, but is no longer the job I did my degree for, and is becoming more office based for the qualified staff, our support staff are visiting patients more than we do and have more training!0 -
