Statute Barred debt on my credit file

Hi all

Would really appreciate some advice. I have a debt of £1700 on my credit file from 7 years ago. Not sure this should still be appearing on my credit file as it should be statute barred right?

The creditor is marking it as a late payment every month so it is affecting my credit rating significantly.

I have contacted the creditor and I have contacted experian and got no where. I know I need to pay it but at the moment I can't get a rental or a mortgage because of a debt from years ago.

Thanks for any help

A debt is only statute barred if you have not acknowledged or made payment for a period of 6 or more years. Have you made payments or acknowledge the debt in the last 6 years ?

Also, if you have acknowledged or made payment towards this debt, it will remain on your credit file for 6 years AFTER the last payment to clear the debt, or 6 years after a default has been recorded against the debt.

Therefore if there is no default recorded and you have been paying or acknowledging this debt then potentially it could be another 6 years before this information falls off your credit reference files.
