wrong surname

Hi all

About 3 years ago I got a £500 bill from a power company, due to them lowering my direct debit without me knowing.
So I set up a repayment scheme with them. Since then I split up with my girlfriend. But she had told me she had paid it off in full. So I stopped the payments
I've have moved a few times lately. But have been sent a letter from a debt collection company to my address. And although the surname is very close to mine, it is spelt wrong and has no initials before it.

Should I pay them or not?
Will this affect my credit?

I hope someone can help
Many thanks

Do you owe them the money? Is the letter meant for you David C, or do you think it is actually intended for Davide C who lives at your address?
  • Thanks for your reply.
I didn't think I did, but my ex must not of paid them. So I guess...yes.
It is the surname that is wrong. Eg. If it was Smith they have spelt it simth.
I emailed the debt collector, and told them it was close to my surname. But is wrong.
They have replied asking for my full name, dob and address. I have not given it.
