The first text message was sent on December 3 1992. Neil Papworth, a 22-year-old British engineer, used his computer to send the message "Merry Christmas" to an Orbitel 901 mobile phone in an early test of the technology.

Mine was probably about 15 years ago when I got my first phone although God only knows what it said... thats how good it was!!

I have probably replied to about twenty texts in my life, but I have only ever sent one that I instigated my self. That was five years ago to arrange a medivac for a colleague who was taken critically ill whilst we were working in the USA. I sent the text to my team leader back in the UK who started the ball rolling and we managed to get my friend home in one piece. I am happy to say my friend made a full recovery and I was actually working with him tonight.
