Ford Sat-Nav discs. Where to buy?

Hi everyone, I'm a long-time lurker but this is my first post. I posted this question on various specialised Ford and motoring forums back in December, but didn't get a response. Now it's time to see if the Money Saving Experts really can save me some money!

I have a 2004/53 plate Ford Mondeo and the sat-nav is now woefully out of date. It doesn't even have the M6-Toll on it! I've been looking at navigation discs on Ebay, and they look much more reasonable than the £280 the dealer wants. However, there are a lot of copies floating about. Also, some of the auctions mention that the update disc (a separate software upgrade required for the newer discs to work) only works on 2005-2007 cars, and not on the earlier Denso naviagation units. I checked the "secret menu" detailed on http://solesz.extra.hu/ and it looks like I have the older unit (Ford Part No. 3S7T 10E887 AG, Denso Part No. 462100-8256).

If the new discs really don't work on the old system, what are my options for upgrading? Can you buy the discs directly from someone else, or am I left being robbed blind by Ford? For nearly £300 I could get a whole new satnav system!

Thanks for your help in advance. For good measure, I've cross-posted this in the techie forum. I hope the mods don't mind!

Cheers,

Rob

  • You could get a whole new sat-nav system from £49.99 (Halfords) - fair enough it's not as neat as an inbuilt system but they're a heck of a lot cheaper to update.

I don't want hideous wires, suckers and mountings spoiling the interior of my car. I already have a built-in system, why would I want to buy a whole new one?

While technically your solution would work, it does sort-of make my point - it's just a database on a cheap disc at the end of the day, so it shouldn't be that expensive. My sat-nav system shouldn't effectively become a housebrick every 3 years. There has to be a cost effective way of obtaining a disc.

Fake Copies of these sort of things often turn up on ebay.

As for cost effective way of obtaining the disc, either you want the sat nav to be up to date, or you don't and it will cost whatever it costs. Ford will charge as much as they think they can get out of people and they'll be expecting people to feel the same as you (unwilling to use another sat nav system) and hence get their wallets out.

Because I have the inbuilt one in my 04 plate Mondeo and compared to my Tomtom ONE, it's absolutely dire. They are extremely basic, no realtime map display, not even supporting 7 digit postcodes, no ability to add POI's and the data entry system is like something from the Ark.

Fortunately for me, the CD no longer reads so I'm going to replace it with a 6000 CD Radio and use my Tomtom ONE and yes, it does work with the heated windscreen.

Consumer Satnav systems have come on in leaps and bounds from the ancient thing that's in your and my car.
