Hi, never knew ducks liked samosa's, learn something every day! :) I agree with you, it's scary the amount of food that gets tossed away, especially when people are visiting food banks to make ends meet.

Not been at the YS front-line, but, delving in the freezer found a YS fish pie reduced from £2.50 to £1.88, so that was an old saving of 62p I'd forgotten I had... About 25% I think.

Need to gird my loins, and take up battle on the YS ramparts, so I can bring back my YS rewards with pride.... :D

I might delve around the abyss of the freezer first to see what is lurking in there, if you are lucky (bored/absently straying across this thread/easily pleased) I will list it to find out what I have already spent/saved....;)

    Hey, I am back....

Ok, here's what is lurking in the freezer:

Rump steak reduced from £3.10 to £2.02 = £1.08 saved
    8 tortilla wraps from £1.05 to 69p = 36p saved
    500g turkey mince from £3 to £2.34 = 66p saved
    Sliced mushrooms from 1.50 to 89p = 61p saved
    6 white bread rolls from 80p to 19p = 61p saved
    2 steak slices from £1 to 70p = 30p saved
    Steak pie for 2 from £5 to £2.10 = £2.90 saved
    Steak pie for 1 from 75p to 50p = 25p saved
    Bacon & leek quiche from £1.50 to £1.02 = 48p saved
    Spag bol from £2.30 to 59p = £1.69 saved
    Shepherds finest pie for 2 from £6 to £3.48 = £2.58 saved
    Egg fried rice for 1 from £1.50 to £1.12 = 38p saved
    Cajun chicken breast x 2 from £3.75 to £2.29 = £1.46 saved
    Vegan spice bakes x 2 from £2.50 to £1.52 = 98p saved
    Salmon fishcakes x 2 from £1.98 to £1.45 = 53p saved
    Bacon from £1.75 to £1.05 = 70p saved
    7 chipolata sausages from £2.03 to £1.32 = 71p saved
    8 chicken legs from £3 to £2.37 = 63p saved
    250g mini chicken fillets from £1.99 to £1.49 = 50p saved

    Total retail = £44.50
    Total paid = £23.65

Total saved = £20.85 not quite 50%, but close! :D

That's if my maths is right. The variations in savings show the difference between shopping in the morning (after the first Yellow Sticker reduction), to shopping after 4 or 5pm in the week (2nd or 3rd YS reductions). Not a bad average.

This is spurring me on to gather more bargains, however, having done an inventory, I know I am ok for meat/pies and suchlike. Need more healthy stuff like vegetables/fruit (whatever is freezable) and accompaniments. Don't want to fall into the trap of hoarding more than I can eat as even frozen stuff has a use by date....

  • Yesterday picked up a £5.50 apple tart for £1.75 (would be annoyed if I'd paid full though, pastry was so dry), cooked chicken drumsticks £1.35 from £4.50 and a whole meal tin loaf for 39p from £1.39.

Another plant day at Morrison's . I did ask if there was a particular day, or a particular time but the staff said that it just depended....so, luck of the draw.
Needless to say these are big savings but I have to say I wouldn't have bought them at full price! In other words I have been lured in to spend... but not a lot!!
    1 x Jacob's Ladder (Polemonium) - looks a bit bashed- 7 pence (£1.37)
    1 x Alpine Ajuga-- 7 pence (£1.37)
4 pack of Tulip Guiseppi Verdi (actually 7 bulbs)- 10 pence (£2.00)
2 x Primrose Bowl - terracotta bowl with 3 primula- 20 pence each (£4.00 each)
    3 x Christmas Cactus (what I know as Zygocactus) 2 x pink, 1 x red - 15 pence each (£3 each)

The Christmas cactus do really well for me- they like easterly light.
Outdoor plants are now outside. 3 primula in pot outside front door now

Grand Total cost of YS : £1.09
    full cost=£21.74
    Saved £20.65

Looks like Aldi reduces their stuff on the date.
I bought a couple of items with a large red "50% off" reduction strip label yesterday. So seems they reduce things that day- but maybe not when the shop opens at 8am. I was shopping 10.30ish.
Half price is fine by me, especially as it tends to be cheaper in the first place.

Their special buys are a different matter. It is certainly a case of being there at the right time. Twice, in the past I have bought items @ 75% off when it's been the very last one in stock.

One thing I like to do is pick up a couple of bags of prepared vegetables at the end of the day as there are often a few left. On Friday I bought a bag of chunky Mediterranean vegetables for 10p and a bag of butternut squash for 5p. They went in a big saucepan topped up with water and a stock cube, brought to the boil and simmered for 90 minutes. That did me 2 meals this weekend with a third portion in the freezer for later this week.
Saved over £20K in 20 years by brewing my own booze.
Qmee surveys total £250 since November 2018
