This diary is having the desired effect already, I'm actually doing things I've been putting off for months! Namely cancelling Sky TV.
Although I haven't actually cancelled it yet, I've found out the best price of Broadband only and I've ordered a reasonably priced Freeview + box. So once that arrives I'll make sure its all working and sky will be getting the chop, saving me the best part of £27 p/m.
In 2 months that will pay for the box.
I also cancelled my union membership which is another £12 odd p/m

Its great to have a diary to get you motivated. Nice to see someone else who has a dream to move to the coast for a better life, good luck to you.

Do a list and post it and you are more likely to get them things done.

You definitely need to sit down and get you and your partners finances sorted before you jump into the mortgage den together. You need to sort out who is paying what or whether you are going to have a joint account for bills that you both put in equally and then pay for your own things separately.

Definitely sort that mobile bill out, I bet you could halve that.

Discussion with partner pencilled in for this weekend :A

I've been looking at putting a list together today, so once I've done it i'll post it up here to tick off as I go.

Phone bill is going to be right up there on the list for sure! :money:

EDIT: Phone isn't due for renewal until OCT & I'm very much stuck on this tariff until then, unless they decide to increase my bill by more than inflation!

Well I would make sure you have a contingency before you start to plan the overpayments, just in case something happens or you find something you need for the house. On which accounts to use, the main site is the best place to look:money:

I am glad you are planning the chat this weekend. :D

Just been playing around with the overpayment calculator to see how much we would have to pay per month to get the newer bigger mortgage paid off in the time frame and its come in at around £1300 per month... which, if my work stays busy and OHs finances aren't too bad I think is quite achievable, and if I can get her involved in it all we could probably do a bit more, maybe even aim for a nice round £1500 pm.

Just a quick question... Has anybody got any tips on how to get your OH (who's not really interested in finance and not 'brilliant' with money), on board with the MFW challenge? I've read loads of diaries and they pretty much all seem to have the person doing the diary battling against their OH. Apart from those living the single life of course!

Congrats on your new diary, sounds like you've made a good start with looking into Sky alternatives, that will save you a lot!

With regards to your phone, do you pay for insurance that you might be able to get cheaper elsewhere? I cancelled my £12.50 phone insurance last week as my new packaged (joint) bank account includes it and that only costs £10 a month. I'm with O2 and it was really easy to cancel.

I have a feeling I might struggle a bit with DH getting on board with the MFW challenge, although he tends to do what I say with regards to finances (that makes me sound awful!) but I'm more likely to research things than him, so he's happy to take my advice (read-let me march him into the nearest Halifax to switch bank accounts to get £100!) I was a little miffed when he came home from work today to say he was getting a decent bonus, then proceeded to look up how much a PS4 would set him back, rather than put money into the house or mortgage...

I think the best way is to do some working out, play around with the overpayment calculator and put facts to them-I told DH that by overpaying X amount a month we could take 9 years off the mortgage... That made him listen!!

Good luck with your chat this weekend, hope it gives you a good idea of where things stand with the finances!

Thanks Laura, I don't have phone insurance no (about the only thing I haven't insured!)

I kind of tried tonight with the overpayments calculator thing, she was doing the ironing and I was sat on the laptop giving her all these (I thought) really impressive scenarios 'if we overpay this much it saves us this much etc'.... no reaction!. Hence why I asked if anyone had actually succeeded lol!

I guess the old 'opposites attract' saying really does apply to MFW'ing!!
