3-6 Month Emergency Fund Challenge!! 20th Oct 15 at 8:30 AM
    Morning Everyone....

I have been wondering for MONTHS now about what would happen if there was some kind of Emergency....I am self-employed and also starting a new Business which will also be on a self-employed basis....so I will never get holiday pay or sick pay....although I AM hoping to maybe get an employed Job but that would only be for a couple of days a Week so it won't cover me completely if something were to happen....

My health is not wonderful at the moment, and hasn't been for a while, but I'm going to start trying to lose Weight once I've moved Flats (which I'm doing this Weekend!!).

So the point of this Challenge is to save up at least 3 month's worth of wages....that can be a different amount for each person....and some people might want to save up to 6 months if they are feeling ambitious!!

Me personally, I want to save 3 months worth of wages which for me will be £6000.

Now, there is ABSOLUTELY NO TIME LIMIT on this Challenge...in fact I suspect it could take me Years to get to the point of having 3 months wages as Savings....For now I can only afford £5 per week but as my new Business builds up (hopefully!!) then I should be able to afford more.

This Thread is mainly for us all to encourage each other to keep on Saving and to celebrate when we reach milestones, however large or small they may be.....Like for me, when I get to having £500 I will be ecstatic!!

I also wanted to say that if at any time an emergency crops up and you need to use your Fund and then start again then please don't worry about doing that.....It's what the Emergency Fund is there for after all....

I don't like having Savings in the Bank as I get too tempted to spend them so I'm going to invest in a Terramundi to put my Savings into at least at first......but other's may choose to use their Bank Accounts or a Tin from Poundworld...or stuff it under your Mattress!!

Sooooo.....Here we go.....I'll add the names below as people Join....xXx

    Evening All

On another Night Shift...but feeling okay at the moment....I'm making a concentrated effort to eat healthily so I have Satsuma's, raw Mushrooms (which people seem to think is weird that I'm eating them ), a Banana and a couple of Cuppa Soups with me...so that should keep me going until 3am...

I've put in another Fiver to my Emergency Fund so that's me up to £50...so I'm really pleased with that...long may it continue!!

    Here's to the Updates... xXx

Anoneemoose - Thanks hun, I DID have a great time and going back in January the day after my 40th Birthday...so I'm really looking forward to that....It sounds like you're doing AWESOME and keeping within your Budgets is GREAT work!! Keep on going hun xXx

    Hi everyone

Glad you enjoyed your trip helen

Please could you add £20 to my pot, the only way is up eh!

Hows everyone doing with the xmas shopping, im being really careful this year and ive made the decision not to buy a good few - children of nephews and nieces who i never see and don;t know their likes and dislikes anymore, plus they are mostly teenagers now -so ive made the decision this year. why do we feel a bit guilty when we make these decisions, i haven't seen or heard from any of them for at least 2 years!

As my retirement date is getting nearer (6-7 years) im making changes to my thinking hence trying to pay down my mortgage, so all these cut backs have some impact on my well being

Keep warm and safe everyone (fireworks going off at the moment around here) lots of noise

    Hi All....

Another Night Shift but this time (*Touch Wood*) I'm finally feeling better....I feel comfortable and happy and content right now...which is a really nice feeling....a few anxieties but only minor ones that I can live with...

I haven't put anymore Money in my Emergency Fund but that's only because I lost track of time today...I have some money to put in so I'll do that tomorrow and Update tomorrow night...

    Here's to the Updates... xXx

skye blue - I've Updated the First Page....You're doing GREAT...keep on going hun....You can do this and we all can!! I always start my Christmas Shopping early as I just don't tend to have the spare few hundred pounds in December to spend....This Year I'm splashing out a little as I've been doing this Night Work and who better to spend it on than the people that I love....But I am also paying some other things with it as well...But yes, Christmas should be a good one this Year...I know what you mean though, I have felt guilty in the past if I couldn't afford a decent present or if I got more for one person than another...You just have to do what you feel is right hun xXx

    Hello hello
I don't seem to come on here very much any more but I think I would like to have a go at this.
I'm unable to sleep as I have a rotten cold which is why I'm lurking at 2 in the morning!
I'd like to build up 6 months emergency fund which will be the amount we put in our 'bills account" every month £1500 so...£9000
Do you guys use your emergency funds if anything comes up in the meantime. I guess you would have to- that's what it's for right?
Anyway will try to read some of the thread now and come back regularly to update if I remember.
    Oh , I have 39pence so far ! Yay

Edit- better make it a round 10k including the extra £1000
    Thanks Dobbibill!

If I include my piggy bank money I've got 42.88 in total. So 9957.12 to go!

Hello 166million and welcome aboard the challenge.

Here we take our time and add to the fund when we can, some on pay day, some ad-hoc or both. A little here, a bigger bit there and it takes as long as it takes.
There's no rush but we all cheer each other along the way.

A few of us are also involved in the £1000 Emergency Fund challenge. This is generally good for unplanned surprises like white goods etc.

Helen will give you a number and add your target and progress to the first page when she pops in.

You're off the mark already, well done.

Pop in - share your success and your challenges.

    Keep on keeping on.

    Hey All

A bit of a down day today....just lots of anxieties but I'll get there....I guess that's life, ups and downs....I'll get through today and hopefully tomorrow will be better

On the plus side I've added £25 to my 3-6 Month Emergency Fund so I'm really pleased with that....It feels oddly satisfying to put that money into my Pot knowing that it's there if I absolutely need it...

    Here's to the Updates... xXx

166million - WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME!! Lovely to have you here...I've added you to the First Page....So you're officially part of the Family...Do let us know how you get on. I have a few different Emergency Funds....This one, for me, is if the absolute worst happens and I need a couple of months or longer off Work then I know I can use it for that....I have another £1000 Emergency Fund that I'm currently building up and that's for general emergencies and I can dip in and out of that if I need to for emergencies...I hope that helps...We all do things our own way... xXx

Dobbibill - Thank you for the lovely Welcome to our newest Member...I hope you're doing well hun xXx

Mooloo - Please don't worry, that IS what it's there for as 166million said and thank goodness you had it there if it was needed for Rent....I have started again a few times and you won't hear any judgements here....Just start again when you are able to.... xXx

A broken down car may be an emergency- however you might want to look at public transport for a month to save up.

For me the emergency fund is for eek I better get that fixed items. This challenge is for ahhh my circumstances have changed how but I have a cushion whilst I adjust.

Don't worry how much you have, every penny counts towards a pound. They will soon build up.

datlex - That's the perfect explanation for the different Emergency Funds that I have....one is for a real-time Emergency and this one is for if my circumstances drastically change in short space of time and I need a good cushion while I adjust....Thank you... xXx

    Thanks guys that’s brilliant
Thanks for the welcome and I’m sorry you're having a bad time Helen. I too struggle with anxiety - I am going through a redundancy at work so this fund is a bit late in getting started really! It seems like you have a sensible and positive attitude about these things and I hope you don’t let it get you down.
Thanks datlex. I already save towards Christmas and a few other things and I always know I can take money from those pots if I really need to. I think it’s time the emergency/ cushion pot had its own pot so to speak
I’m up early again having a lemsip
Hope to speak to you again soon

Have added 12p to round things up to £43

I have different bank accounts for different things, but this year I took my eye off the ball and bailed out the kids who promised to pay me back but didn’t and my self employed status meant that my rent went up, and my tax credits went down at the same time as my maintenance was cut. All in all it amounts to a difference in my overall income of £140 a week. I am struggling to bring my expenses down and now unable to pay myself as much as last year so also have that to impact my situation.

I'm on another Night Shift (you're going to get fed up of me saying that LoL )....Feeling okay although the past couple of days I have felt really down and anxious....I may not be getting paid when I expected to be paid and it could be next Week now and I'm feeling anxious about that - But hopefully it will work out okay....

Nothing to Report moneywise....I have already put in £25 this Week and that may well be it, not sure, may be able to put in a little more at the Weekend or tomorrow but we'll see....

    Here's to the Updates... xXx

166million - I've Updated the First Page....You're doing INCREDIBLE...keep on going hun...you CAN do this!! Thank you for your lovely words....It's hard having anxiety for me because I can never tell when I'm over-reacting to something or whether there genuinely is something to be worried about...I hope everything goes well for you...You really ARE doing great...We can only take one step at a time and keep putting one foot in front of another....xXx

datlex - Thank you for your comments to Mooloo, much appreciated...How are you getting on? xXx

Mooloo - I know it's hard but try not to feel disheartened, you managed to build up your Fund before and you will do again....I've just re-read the First Post that I did on this Challenge and it says that there is NO time limit to this Challenge and that it will probably take me Years to do this...and it will....We do it at our own pace and in our own time according to what we can manage....Please don't worry and just start again when you can...We are all here for you when you are ready xXx

Hi DreamerHelen am plodding along. Must say I am glad folk in this part of the forum are nice. Some people who use the savings, pensions, insurance and banking parts are actually rather nasty.

Hope everyone is doing well. I've still got my cold.
My target of 10k maybe means I'll never actually reach my goal but I know I am working towards it so

    Evening All

Guess where I am? Yep, on another Night Shift...I haven't done any for a while....and to be honest I'd rather be at home in bed right now but never mind....at least I'm out earning money rather than at home spending it!! LoL...

I've managed to put another £25 in my Emergency Fund so I'm very pleased with that....I've reached the £100-mark so I'm really pleased with that as well....

    Here's to the Updates... xXx

datlex - I'm so sorry that you've experienced problems in other parts of MSE....And I'm really proud that we're all lovely here and that we all try to support each other even things don't always work out the way we'd like xXx

166million - You will get to your Goal if you keep moving forwards, don't worry how long it takes you...It will take me years and years to get to my final Goal but at least we are moving towards it... xXx

skye blue - I'm doing okay....I don't know why my Anxiety takes hold sometimes....and I don't know why it's worse sometimes...Mum says I was an anxious child but I'm not sure why I can't just let things go sometimes....But thank you for checking on me...I'm doing mostly okay today....And you're right, we really are a lovely bunch on here... xXx

Just dropping in to say hello again and to apologise for being away from you lovely people for so many weeks. Real life has been the absolute pits for me but I know several of you are encountering bad times too and I'm sending big hugs to all who need them.

I haven't had the time to read all the posts for the past 6 weeks or so and will try to put that right as soon as I can.

Sadly, my money making has hit the buffers and I've totally lost track of where I'm up to with my debt-busting and saving. I really must make a big effort in what's left of 2017 to get a grip so I can start next year in a much better place than I started this one.

    Take care xxx

    Hi CBC,

I'm sorry things have been tough for you. Real life has a habit of being a nuisance on times.

I hope you are OK now. You have been missed, it's lovely to see you back.
