Flat share - council tax liability

Options
Hi all

I'm currently renting a flat with someone (we're both on the tenancy agreement)

He agreed that he'd sort out the concil tax - I've recently noticed that he's declaring single occupancy

Can I be liable for this? The council tax is in his name

    Yes.

You are jointly liable for the CT and if single person discount has been applied for you are both legally comitting fraud.

the fact you are both in occupation and under a single tenancy agreement (ie not renting individual rooms) means you are both jointly and severally liable for the CT irrespective whose name is actually on the bill itself.

as mentioned above , short of being student or under 18 then council tax fraud is being committed for which you are as liable as he is.
