Problem is people who want a 14 year old luxury car at 3.5k generally can't afford the average bills that come up.

I looked at a 11k Boxter was very close o pulling the trigger till my uncle showed me the astronomical prices for services / brakes / clutches etc.

You could buy it and run it for 2 years with no issues or you could get it and it need 2k of work in 5 months.

    Roll of the dice basically

Exactly. I looked at Boxters a year ago and was surprised how cheap they can be to buy. I did the same and looked at the cost of parts/servicing

    Went with a Z4 instead.

A friend of mine works for a Porsche engine specialist, its a difficult conversation telling someone their 7K boxters has done 7K of engine damage.
Uncle basically sat me down and gave me a reality check saying a similair thing.

I'd of ended up paying finance on a car that I would need to finance most major repairs for

People who can afford to buy new luxury cars are the people who can afford to run them.
Because they buy new they don't get the big mechanical bills of course.
I remember being told by a colleague back in the early 80s about a chap he knew who ran an immaculate old-ish Rolls. He had it by choice, not because he couldn't afford new.
He'd just taken it to Rolls for servicing, and it came back with a bill for over £1000 for work on the brakes. Around £5000 these days.

Something that is worth remembering when buying a car at the bottom end of its depriciation/life - the person who is selling it is likely doing so because they believe there is something wrong with it.

I will buy it but for a bit less. If he can sell it for the asking price, he will.
He would normally be my go to guy with regards to cars and motors. But I am seeking independent advice as he would probably be biased on the BMW.

So he's a motor trader selling as if he's not then? That's how that reads.

It's not you by any chance that's selling it? It does smell a bit :spam:

It's not me selling. I am at a point where I fancy something big. My original short list was:
    Jag XF
    Mercedes-Benz S500
    BMW
    VW Phaeton
I have been advised to stay well away from Mercedes-Benz.
So the choice is narrowed down to 3. The BMW has come up, and he needs to sell as he will be getting a motor from Motability. But I understand the issues with big badge, big bills. I will wait a month or so and then, maybe I will go for it. The car has been remapped so it can do 45mpg, which I believe is not bad

I didn't know that was the case.
However, I guess I was a bit vague in my OP.
What kind of mileage can a BMW engine do before it goes wrong. Is 100K too much mileage for a diesel engine? Likewise for a gearbox, which I believe can be expensive too.

Sounds like you're asking the forum for a guarantee this car won't go wrong. You're not gonna get that.
If I told you that they start going wrong at precisely 99,595 miles would it put you off?
Yes, if the engine goes wrong, it'll be expensive. Yes, if the gearbox goes wrong, it'll be expensive. Apply that to lots of the electronics and toys in this car, that other cars simply don't have.
Have you looked at how much a tyre will cost for this car, for example?
Assume that stuff WILL go wrong, and have a pot set aside for it.
