Somehow it's 3rd July. This month is going to be a little difficult financially but we're aiming to pay £1,000 from the debt.

My son hasn't been well again and hasn't been to school today. :( The weekend wasn't as planned due to son not being well but I have carried on with the new bedtime routine, so have been going to bed early.
I have heard that theory before as well!

Alex, when did your son start playing - it's the piano, isn't it? My younger daughter is only five at the moment, but I thought about looking into music lessons for next year (I limit them to one extra curricular each and she's chosen hers for this year already) - I assume your son had already started by her age, would I be right?

Also, if I do go with piano lessons, can I get away with just a keyboard for practice at home? My old piano was damaged beyond repair years ago and I no longer play, and I can't really justify buying one just for a child who may get bored of it again in a year.

My son started violin and piano at the age of 3 but he was very interested and we go at his pace. I want him to enjoy music. :) He doesn't have formal music lessons as I teach him on an ongoing and continual basis. Five / six is a good age to start, though to learn an instrument properly takes a lot of time, patience and practise.

I have a few pupils with only a keyboard at home and whilst I would rather they had a piano, they get to play mine once per week and I try to give them opportunities to play other pianos too and it seems to work until the pupil gets to c. Grade 1 or 2 at a push.

Thanks for posting that explains those Caz, I tried to explain it to someone recently but didn't put it as well as you.

Lovely to read bright happy posts such as this Alex. Our children are small for such a short time and I love to take note of all the things they come out with. Their world is so literal.

I have every confidence you will keep up with those debt repayments, first chunk gone so onwards and downwards.

It seems like ages since I've seen your name, Cath. I hope you have now fully recovered. :)

I think I have enough material to write an amusing book with all the things my son and pupils say. :D

I am trying to remain as positive as possible. Still get quite a lot of negative thoughts but I write down and spend ten minutes per day reflecting upon and thinking how I could have thought about the situation in another way. Sometimes it works. Also trying not to think about myself as a depressed, anxiety ridden mess. Latest one is trying to think of myself the way I would like my son and also pupils to. :rotfl: Yes, it's crazy but it is working and getting me to bed earlier - staying up until 2am is not setting a good example. ;)

£1,000 planned repayment this month. Onwards and downwards, indeed.
I once heard a little one say - after kneeling whilst playing for a long time.

"I've got bees in my knees" :rotfl:

obviously meaning "pins and needles" :)

    July Targets:

    Organise Summer holiday: 1. Trip to R.W. 2. Holiday. 3. Agricultural shows x 3.
    Debts: Pay £1,000 (/ £4,000 to pay)
    Total Grocery Spend: £ / £400.
    New bedtime routine: 2/31.
    Meditation: 6/21.
Keeping organised: Started to use the calendar on my iPad / phone rather than a standard diary. It is working well. I can input postcodes and it alerts when I need to leave according to real time traffic which is astonishing. My wife has used this system for a long time. Also using OneNote for a more detailed schedule / planning pupils' lessons etc. Finding OneNote better than Apple's Notes app but downloaded the app onto my iPad / phone which means I can view it at any time. Keeping organised is a bit of a revelation to me. :rotfl:

This week has been very busy as we are coming up to the end of term. I have been to meet my new school (and class!) which I will be based in for the majority of the upcoming year. Have a few more visits there before summer too. I'm not near so apprehensive having spent a few days at the school and am sure I'm doing the right thing. Mrs. K. is a bit concerned about me but is much more supportive than she was.

Glad to hear you've had a good time. :) Any particular points of note?

You're not the only one. ;) I'm just about to submit and log out to go to bed and I can't quite believe I was just considering the idea I'm going to bed a little "late" tonight. :rotfl:

What specifically is concerning MrsK? I'm glad she's being supportive but what is it that she's worrying about?

This holiday was all about relaxing compared with the city breaks for sightseeing that we enjoy. This year my favourite thing was probably swimming in the sea. We started with swimming off boats and enjoyed it so much we made it a daily habit. Alongside that lots of reading, eating, drinking and catching up with friends.:)

Sounds like a nice, relaxing time. I enjoy sightseeing but our coming holiday will be a relaxing one. Not really much to see in southern Spain that I haven't seen already. To be honest, I'm not particularly looking forward to going away but my wife and son are, so we will still be going. I think doing the sensible thing is annoying me somewhat as I was really looking forward to going to France.

Re. my wife. She's concerned things are going to be as they were when I previously had a "proper job" - I become consumed by it and there's a negative impact on my health. Whereas I am sure that won't be the case. I know the signs and can recognise when things are going in a downward spiral for me now. The school I'm going to be spending the vast majority of the year is very supportive to all staff, which will be good for me. My wife also has some selfish concerns about whether her dinner will be ready within 10 minutes of her getting back from work and is further concerned that during busy times / when I am involved in school concerts and parents evenings etc. that she may have to pick our son up from my cousin's occasionally. Mrs K has recently changed her mind about our son attending prep school and thinks if I find myself in a full time position for 2018-19 he should board to make things easier. I know he wouldn't cope and is settled at his current school, my cousin is happy to have him after school and he loves being there and helping so I don't think it necessary. If I'm honest I'd rather not pursue teaching beyond next year if it means my son will have to board.

Just had a relaxing day today. Have been walking and enjoying the weather, so not spent hardly any money. :) Unfortunately, I've not been as bright as for the past week or two but both yesterday and today I've had a few glasses of wine (not too much by any stretch of the imagination), perhaps it has had a bit of a negative impact, even so. My parents haven't been easy to deal with for the past few days, either. This morning when I went to the house my mother told me she had decided now is the time I need to move home. I told her it isn't going to happen and get the "look how much we've provided for you and what we can provide that you cannot for your son" lecture. We're all there for lunch tomorrow, so hoping nothing will really be said and things are a bit more positive.

I think you need to reassure your wife that she will manage the care of little K.

You have said in the past that she is not very maternal, she is probably not feeling confident.

One way of trying to help her is if little K can say how much he is looking forward to spending time with mum while you are at work.

You are going to do a job that you love and that it is not like any other paid employment you you have had in the past.

As for your wife's suggestion about boarding school will not work for either you or your son.

Just try your best to keep reassuring your wife that she will love the time spent with little K.

    Take care

    Hello Alex!

Have you got a slow cooker? Might be a solution to the dinner - ready problem?
Though I have heard that some women are able to cook...

Alex, I think you're right - I was a psychotherapist for a long time, and for about ten years I seemed to specialise in adults who'd been sent away to boarding school at the age of 7 or so :( The symptoms were akin to PTSD: not every child gets it, of course, but enough. Teenage boarding is quite different. The only adult that was sent away at the age of 7 who liked it, did so because their home life was so bad :(
