There's a lot more to computer security than virus prevention. Anti-virus won't stop spyware, which can cause as much damage as a virus; you're just less likely to notice straight away. http://www.aumha.org/a/parasite.htm explains what you're dealing with.
There's also the problem of fake websites, I've not yet tried http://www.corestreet.com/spoofstick/ but it looks an interesting tool to stop you getting caught out by phishing sites.
I'm no expert but having seen a spyware bug jump into my computer, and spending several weeks getting rid of it and others of which I was unaware, I've found some useful and, I believe, reliable advice.
Before you start though, be aware that there's a lot of anti-spyware available that is either a money-making activity, or is actually spyware. http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm lists dozens of questionable or downright malicious providers, including some with very similar names to those recommended below. It also has information about trustworthy sites. Please please check there before using anything you find using a search engine, or recommended by someone you don't know…you don't know me, do you?
You could start with http://aumha.org/a/noads.htm, or go straight to http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm It's part of http://www.aumha.org/win5/, which is a site recommended by a techie at work who I trust completely.
Having cleaned up my system, I'm now updating and running at least once a week, the following free downloads:
CWShredder http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.exe
Ad-Aware SE Personal http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/
SpyBot S&D http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
IESpyAd2 https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm
MS AntiSpy http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/default.mspx
Spyware Blaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/index.html
I have also used HiJackThis http://www.aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe, which is great provided you follow the instructions very carefully. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42,
and http://aumha.org/a/hjttutor.php
Take advice from the Aumha forums about what to delete http://forum.aumha.org/index.php?c=12. (It's very easy to delete vital stuff…don't blame me if you mess up!)
I've got cookie blocker set to 'high' on the Privacy tab of Internet Properties in Control Panel, and I use Zone Alarm’s anti-virus stuff (It's well priced on Amazon) as well as the MS firewall.
Before switching to Zone Alarm I used their free firewall item:

and adjust the settings

I’ve pretty well stopped using MS Internet Explorer and now use Deepnet Explorer. http://www.deepnetexplorer.com/ It's nicer to use as each page has its own tab, and has a 'phishing' alarm.
There's loads more stuff at

sometimes a nasty virus or spyware can actually disable your anti-virus scanner thats installed on your computer, so if you are found to be infected, or you have loads of spyware, its always a good idea to ry an online virus scan to make sure your anti virus software is working as it should.
ps. please note, anti-virus software is one of a few thoings someone can do to protect their computers,
you also need firewall, unless you have windows firewall ( windows xp users)
you also need a spy removal tool like the guy above has listed
as well as an anti-virus program (i used to use Norton antivirus, but once they started to ask for payment for subscriptions, i switched to AVG antivirus - theres not a lot of difference.)0 -
great list there0

mechy wrote:Not sure if anyone hasa answered this one, but these free scans are ok, then to fix the problem you have to purchase the prog, at £30 or whatever. Can anyone suggest any free progs that remove these viruses or Trojans. I run AVG and also run spysweeper occaisionally. I may actually be refferring to spyware. Sorry for the confusion
The online scanners DO fix problems, AVG removes viruses and guess what
yep its Free.. so is Avast, but dont have two antivirus programs installed
at the same time or your PC will go bonkers and die.
Dont worry about the confusion it happens all the time.
For Spyware or Scumware removal there is MS AntiSpyware Beta, Adaware
and also Spybot Search and destroy all free, Just google the names.
