Mercedes 30-year anti-corrosion warranty

Hi all,

Am a bit concerned. Have a 2001 CLK which has suddenly started to bubble at all four wheel arches. I understand Mercedes have a 30-year anti-corrosion warranty on their cars, however my last service wasn't done by them, but rather by an independent Merc specialist (who does a better job, in fact he told me that he could tell some of what he did in the service had never been done before).

I've been told to bring the car in to the dealer so the bodywork estimator can have a look, but I'm concerned that they will try and get out of it on the technicality that the most recent service wasn't by an official dealer.

Does anyone have any advice on how I should approach this? It seems pretty unfair given that it's not as if an official Mercedes service would have stopped the rot (pun intended)!

you dont need to get it serviced by the main dealer to keep warranties these days.
you are right in saying a mercedes service would not have stopped the rusting.
its a common flaw on mercs around this age,i think cheap metal from china was to blame.
get it back to them and remind them that bodywork is hardly a servicable item.
im sure they will have some get out clause that you had not polished it with the recommended products or some twaddle like that.

The usual get out is that there is an annual "paintwork inspection service" that has to be done for the antirust warranty to be valid. I suspect you have never ever had this done let alone last year.

Anti-corrosion warranties normally only cover corrosion which has perforated metal from inside a cavity outwards. The bubbling on the wheel arches is the result of water, grit, salt and other crap bombarding the wheel arch lip.

  • You should be ok under the Mobilo warranty, if the first dealer says no or offers only a contribution, try around at some others. With Mobilo you really must get it serviced by a dealer, you can't go to an indie and expect to keep the warranty.

You may find the decision will take a few weeks though.

I have seen examples where they're replaced wings, sills, boot lids, bonnets, and repaired anything else they find, at a very low cost to the owner.

you can use a vat registered garage using OEM quality parts and retain warrenty
however most bodywork warrantys require a dealer paintwork inspection annually as part of the T&C's
  • Thanks all for the varied and interesting replies. I'm going to take it down there soon, and will let you know what they say! Fingers crossed...

You are the second person to suggest this, do you have any source to back it up? It seems quite likely that they will try to wriggle out of it this way.

No you can not. You have to use the dealer network to retain the anti-corrosion warranties offered by Mercedes as the bodywork inspection is a part of the service.

Most dealers will offer a contribution only or an outright refusal if you do not.

reread my reply, you can get the pantwork inspection done by a dealer.
however you do not need to use a dealer for servicing intervals.
i'll try and dig up the info but i have a mate who is a dealer tech
i cant remember the exact legislation/wording but it was down to anti monoploy rulings on servicing

You can save money on maintenance by going to a cheaper independent dealer rather than a franchised one. Since October 2003 it has been possible to go to nonfranchised dealers for repairs and servicing without jeopardising your warranty. However, it’s not always that simple, as some independents will not have all the diagnostic devices or fault-finding codes to enable them to do the job.
