Adding someone on to council tax for travel expenses

Hey guys, my mother is trying to add my name on to the coucil tax bill to show that I financially contibutes to the house but when she phoned them they said they can't due to it being private property, which she owns. Is this correct? As I am aware of other people being able to do this.

Thanks for any information you guys can give me.

It's not clear what advice you want.

If you live there, you should be on the bill.

    If you don't, you shouldn't.

We need to know more about your circumstances before we can think about commenting, especially in relation to how this is related to travel expenses.

Please don't falsify where you live. It's fraud.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

The council are correct in what they have told her - they will show the liable party on the demand notice (i.e. the person who's responsible for paying). The liable party is defined in legislation and the council have to follow this.

The council will often hold details of other occupiers but generally these are not noted on the demand notice as they don't need to be.

Thank you for the information. I was not falisifying where I live as this is where I come home to on the weekend from work and it is my registered living address.

I was just trying to find out if the Council were correct in what they were saying as they said to my mother that they have been asked this many times before by military personel. So they write a letter stating they live there for council tax purposes but the Admin at my base have stated that it needs to be my name on the council tax bill.

Again thank you for the information.

The MOD will only pay for a charge for which you are personally liable.

Where people have been added it's most likely that a demand notice had been sent only in one name and the partner has not been added (it happens a lot) so the council have corrected the demand notice to show the correct names.

I assume you're talking about the 'get home' allowance? At my sons base, he had to produce a bill with his name on but that allowed utilities instead of council tax. Is this an option?

June 20.....£7,587.....3 creditors left 72% paid

£26,200 on interest only part of mortgage (July 16)...will chip away £17,103
    £49,200 repayment mortgage ( July 16) £37,764
  • My DH had to show a Council tax bill with his name on, utility bill with his name on, and a letter from our mortgage lender with the property details, date, and his name on for the 'get you home' allowance. Of course if this is a different allowance/expense, you can ignore that!
