Camping

Used to love camping when I was younger when it seemed you could put a tent up in a farmers field (with permission) or in some rough ground wherever you found it. I got turned off when it became commercialised.

I'd like to get back into it as a short break option. Is it possible to camp (the 2 man pup tent, rough sort as opposed to the holiday camp sort) without having to set up in some camp ground or other organised sort of affair?

Be interested to hear from others experiences.

Thanks.

Yes we go to on metal detecting/camping trips. Did the Tyndrum gold prospecting and camping at the local abandoned gold mine, bathing in the local waterfall - great fun but not for some.

We also do a bit of extreme golfing - hit a one wood off the top of machu pichu and goatfell last year.
    lol

We do Arran every year and camp out on various beaches and at Sannox we kinda move round the island but ONE PIECE OF ADVICEFOR US OLDIES - not sure what age you are but im over 40 and my back gets very sore even on the sand so we usually take an inflatable bed or a cheap lilo will do - thats my only recommendation for you as its a great experience for me but not for some who like a nice bed and cant handle the insects and noises at night.

We use a two man pop up tent - you know the sort - the round one that pops out and no matter how hard you try you cant get it folded back in lol

So there another piece of advice - practice folding it back up until you can do it in your sleep - our first holiday we had the tent up inside the car as we couldnt fold it back into the small round pack it came in - major error.

Take some barbecue coals - just bought some from poundland for this years Arran barbecue on the beach and a water bag for fresh water - Poundland is actually great for all the essentials - camping plates, knives, solar lantern is useful in the dark when you cant find that essential piece of tent.

Who wants to shower in a cubicle when you can dive and swim under a natural waterfall, climb up the mountains into the fresh clean air and camp in the whistling wind , experience the peace and calm of nature - compare it to a camping site there is no comparison - you will come back a new man believe me its essential for me as it revives my soul.

Only boring old faertes go to camping sites - be adventurours and bring back that spirit of youth - you wont regret it and you will have more interesting experiences and if you are like us memorable disasters and fun.

    Hope all that helps.

Strictly, all land in England and Wales is owned so you must gain permission before camping - illegal to Wild camp except on Dartmoor, where camping is allowed for up to two consecutive nights in the same spot as long as you aren't within 100 metres of a public road or in any enclosure or restricted area. Wild camping is usually tolerated in parts of Snowdonia and the Lake District but never in the Peak District

You can wild Camp in on hill land in Scotland as long as you respect any nearby dwellings or livestock. The exception is in parts of Loch Lomond National Park, where it's been banned due to antisocial behaviour (mostly litter & vandalism)

One of the main problems in popular wild camp spots is litter! Human waste is another as people seem incapable of dealing with it properly & they make it highly unpleasant for others.

There are loads of legal but "wild" sites out there - ask a friendly farmer or hunt online for info at places like http://www.nearlywildcamping.org/directory/
