OK I give up with the SC now
I have read all there is to read on here....to seal or not to seal etc etc.
I have so far used the SC to do a bung it in chicken caserole, cooked on low, where the chicken breast (off the bone) was tough as old boots. OK maybe beginners bad luck and use on the bone next time.
Yesterday, I decided to try beef joint. Have read so much on here and honestly can't see what I did that is any different to anyone else. I did a piece of topside for 7 hours on low. lightly sealed first, onions and carrots done in the juices with a bit of red wine, tom puree etc. The beef is like old bloody shoe leather   I am SOOOOOOOO disappointed.

i always use my slow cooker for cooking beef. start it at 10am put it in raw with boiling water just covering beef. adding stock cube and gravy granules and put it on medium then turn it down to low about 2 hours before i want it. take out the beef 20 minutes before tea,
adding more gravy granules to slow cooker if needed and turn it up on high for the last 20 minutes. works perfect every timespanky xx

topside is OK isn't it? it was just over a fiver and would feed 4
I've decided to put it on low again for a few hours...perhaps my SC cooks differently. It has an auto setting but I dunno what that does and no idea where manual is (yeah yeah I know! )The greatest gift you'll ever learn,is just to love and be loved in return:love:Nature boy - Eden Ahbez0 -
Hi I have always cooked stew in the slow cooker and that works fine. I am a new convert to rice pudding as well. I was going to give the joint of beef a go, I would think that putting some water in there should help keep the joint tender. Maybe the problem that you had was the beef, itself maybe it was just a tough joint?? Dont give up. I read on here that somebody used frozen food straight into slow cooker, do you think that would work with mince ? Or would i end up with a big block of cooked mince for tea?0

mmm maybe, thanks......I read on here that someone did get a big old lump of mince, but I reckon you could soon chop it all up in there with a knife and fork and be none too different!! Hey, you've made me feel better! Can you actually get dud bits of beef then? It's a Tesco 21 day matured jobby. I never buy joints usually as only me and DD and neither of us are massive carnivores....mmmmm.........YEAH it was the meats fault....thanks :rotfl:The greatest gift you'll ever learn,is just to love and be loved in return:love:Nature boy - Eden Ahbez0 -
sorry i feel like lately i am asking really stupid questions that i should know answer to. i'm sure having a 3rd baby has made me incapable of anything that requires and answer i need to think about .
ANyway i have a slow cooker and i am trying to get back into my routine of cooking proper family meals. One meal we love is roast beef. i am cooking this tonight. ans i was thinking, is it possible to cook the joint in the slow cooker?
But the way i was thinking of doing it was to wrap the beef in foil so that as it cook's it stays moist , as there nothign worse than dry meat. if i think about it , my brain is saying yep that is fine, of course it will work. but my confidance is saying don't be stupid ask someone.
my hubby isn't a great fan of the idea of meat cooked in a slow cooker , so i need to bring him round to the idea that it will still be delsih. as if i use it more , it will certainly make life so much easier for me.
Thanks in advance.:T0
