I think it's a summer squash, hence why it has been kindly given to you now. It is more like courgette, ie you can eat it all rather than winter squash like pumpkin where you discard the rind and seeds.

It is a squash. Very nice. I cooked them like courgettes last year:slice and then fry, no need to skin it.

It looks like an over grown patty pan squash. When they are that size they don't taste of anything much. Try frying slices with some garlic. Or make a squash lasagne.

I'd stuff it a little like a marrow, serve in wedges like a cake. :).

I stuff my marrows with a lamb mince, onion, garlic, a little dried fruit, rice or quinoa , the bits of squash you've taken out to make a shell, then some cumin seed, or cinnamon, or Ras al hanout.

I've tried growing veg in the house but no luck. Watering ruins the carpet.
