We fitted a bolt on the door but there was no where to put the pad lock to lock it closed. So took it off. So maybe there is a different type of door bolt that would accept a padlock or something similar.

On this type of door/door frame?

Do you think it matters that the door and door frame is hollow?
How about either of these two products? Would they work do you think?

The trouble with the chain one is that other students can still see in the room a little as the way its fitted it has to be loose enough to put the chain in right?0 -
I'm intrigued to know why you'd want to have locking internal doors.
Because sometimes one has in strangers - eg leaving a workman on his own or the like.
Add that I'm a woman living on my own - and I know I'm living in a much safer area than I was - but I like to have the option of locking the bedroom door behind me if I wish to. It's a peace of mind thing.0 -
Would this work if I put a pad lock though it?

Be aware that some of your friend's housemates might think it fun to just slide the bolt across and lock your friend in his room.0 -
If the house is classed as an HMO, I believe you can't put a lock on that can't also be opened from the inside, so an external bolt & padlock wouldn't do. I fitted a proper Yale type latch for my SD in her student room. I'd be nervous about her being locked in with what some are proposing, although looking at the door, it's been done like that before.0
