Computer slow to start up

Hi all

My machine was booting up quickly until a few weeks ago and now it seems to take twice as long.

I'm running Windows 7 and according to Task Manager:

Cached 1034 (and increasing)

Free 1619 (and dropping)

At the moment, I only have 1 instance of Firefox running with one tab open (this one).

I've scanned with Avast, MBAM and SuperAntiSpyware and they've all come back clean.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Use MSconfig to disable non-essential/non-MS services & startups (even Avast), then re-enable bit by bit.

Did the slow downs happen after any particular event, eg upgrading to Avast 7 - make sure you disable/enable the service & run entry together.

Hi all

I've removed the Comodo firewall (and confirmed the Windows one is active) and removed superAntiSpyware.

I only have two things left on MSCONFIG:-
Realtek (looks to be audio drivers) and
Avast.

Seems to boot up quicker already.

I've always found Windows Firewall to be more than sufficient to use as a Firewall when comparing it to CMODO....but then again, I might just not like CMODO products since I found them very heavy on usage...though, they're secure...but nothing that AVAST can't match (which you already have).

I'd advise however, you have a go at installing "Wise Registry Cleaner" (Not allowed to post link as a newbie poster, so just Google it). I've ran it through many computers to basically clean up your Registry of old/invalid entries...little tweaks to your system and defrags your registry to keep it moderately clean.

I;d recommend not using any kind of registry cleaner on your system.,
only need to remove 1 wrong key and you'll have to reinstall windows.
the registry is the heart of the computer.

As for using the config program to stop the processes, that ok if you like to be prompted every time you load windows that you have changed something. personally prefer autoruns by system internals, does the same thing, and goes deeper into the OS.

I'd agree with the above. There's little or no benefit in running registry cleaners above & beyond their potential to mess things up.

Whilst it's recognised that many use MSConfig for startup management, longer term I'd look at using something more dedicated. It's (MSConfig) primary use is troubleshooting configuration issues - Having lots of disabled startups just adds to the work should you need to use it for its intended purpose.

I normally use CCleaner to sort out what's starting or not, but checked MSCONFIG the other day to confirm what CCleaner was telling me.

I've installed Visual Studio 2010 Express (including SQL Server 2008 (the free edition)) and it's gone very slow to boot again.
