I've got a tub of the mayflower brand curry powder, that's passable. I had the nuggets/rice/sauce just last week. Threw some peas into the rice for "excitement value"
I don't really make any individual dish often enough to ever really make "going to a special effort" worthwhile.
Karcher - pizza what's not to like0 -
Absolutely we do
I can not afford or justify the expense of a take out curry ....but I have made an executive decision and put a pizza in the oven
Less than £2 as opposed to £24 is very preferable and doable and I'm sure I'll enjoy it.
Thank you all ..you are a very lovely lot :A
Good choice0 -
Morning everyone:hello:
I think I'm back to cooking for one today though son has had to hightail back to the emergency dentist first thing poor soul :(so might be here another night if if doesn't settle down. Either way I'm having souvlaki and will make some tsatziki to have with it so it will be a vampire-free house tonight;) Advantage of solo living is I can use as much garlic as I want and I'm not expecting to see anyone tomorrow so will munch on any leftovers:D
I'm going to sit down later and work out a meal plan for the week, I didn't last week and felt I quickly fell back in rut of bung it on a tray or nuke it and add gravy......
I suspect so may liberate my remaining frozen HM soup so will definitely make another pot of something - it's still perishing here so definitely soup weather I'll have a fridge rake and see what needs using up though I think lentil & bacon might be on the cards
What's everyone else having today?0 -
Morning.
You'll be pleased to hear I didn't burn my pizza and had one small slice leftover for breakfast.
I have no idea what I will eat tonight..I can't stop thinking about take out curry. I know I can make one myself, curry from scratch is one of my specialities but quite different from what I'd buy for a take out.
Hopefully my will power will win over and I'll make something from my reasonably stocked fridge/freezer/cupboards.
Swept and mopped the floor about 30 minutes ago and am sat on the sofa waiting for it to dry...doesn't appear to be in any kind of hurry which is frustrating as I want coffee 'I'm sinking in the quicksand of my thought
And I ain't got the power anymore'0 -

Have you thought about getting the "Curry Secrets" book - it's only a few quid and it covers all the takeaway favourites and they do taste like the real mccoy:) I don't think my son has stopped using his since "Santa" brought him a copy after I refused to let him take mine:cool:0 -
I get all my Indian recipes from Al's Kitchen on YouTube......jalfrezi, dhansak, madras, tandoori chicken etc etc.
They taste like restaurant meals, but better.0 -

The indian I like is a biryani - so it's the flavour of the rice - and the ingredients list is as long as a giant's arm. I did pick up a random pack of biryani mix this week, dunno why, these things happen don't they ... so I'll give that one a whirl at some point.
The trouble with indians is usually that they require long lists of spices that you'll actually only ever use to make 3-4 curries a year - then "they" tell you that spices go off and should be fresh. They also really require a hob, which I don't use ... so I'm pretty much on a backfoot every way with indians. I've also got some "gifted" random jars of sauce in the cupboard I must get round to using at some point (SC's is good for those), when I can remember/be in a position to buy a pack of chicken (cubes as I can't touch raw meat).
2pm and today I've already managed to:
- make/eat a cheese/crisp sandwich
- scoff about 8 chocolates
- make kiev, mash, carrots, peas and eat it all
- make up some butterscotch angel delight, which is currently chilling/setting in the fridge.
It's a bit of a piggy day really0 -
PN, now I want Angel Delight, not had it for decades but perhaps will get some on next mooch, depending on price of course, so far getting by on Ambrosia tinned custard at 50p tin, does me for two meals
Curry, I never buy take away ones, the places around here are not ones I would choose from, and like others, they are no longer a cheap option
I find the meals for one frozen ones from Lidl, and Iceland are just right for me, no doubt not authentic but I am no judge on that, but own made curried baked beans is any recipe I do sometimes
Open tin beans, tip into pan, add teaspoon of curry powder, heat, stir & serve. another plus of living on your own, curried beans, good for the heart if school rhyme is correct
Tonight is LO roast chick with oven chips & beans, and given above recipe, I may go oriental with the beansEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -

This is what I make for 'us' when we fancy indian quick and easy in the microwave.
It makes enough for about 4, so you'd need to reduce the quantity accordingly and the spices are to 'our' taste, so might be too much/not enough.
Rice - 2 cups
Mixed (frozen or leftover) Vegetables: I use a mix of Peppers, Carrot, Green Peas, Beans, cauliflower, broccoli - 2 cups (you can also chuck in a cup of your cooked chicken)
3 Onions - chopped
A tin of Tomatoes,
Ginger/garlic (fresh or powder) - 1 tsp of each
Coriander Powder - 1 tsp
Cumin Powder - 1 tsp
Garam Masala Powder - 2 tsp
Milk - 3 tbsps
1 Tsp oil or a knob of butter
1 Cup plain yoghurt
Microwave the onion and garlic with the oil or butter for 1 min or until the onion is soft (times will depend on your microwave).
In the same bowl, mix the spices (keep half the garam in reserve) with the yogurt and stir in the veggies to coat - leave on one side for now.
In a new bowl, mix 3 cups of boiling water, and the milk, add the rice, cover and microwave on high for about 8 minutes (the water should be mostly absorbed and the rice 'not quite' cooked). Stir thoroughly.
In a new bowl (yes, three bowls) layer the rice and veggies and tomatoes - making sure the top layer is rice and including any extra liquid from the rice. Cover and microwave on high 10 minutes.
Stir well and microwave in 2 minute increments uncovered until all liquid is absorbed and everything is cooked.
Sprinkle with the remaining spoon of Garam and eat!Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you. Anne Lamott
It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
