But why would you go out and spend 4/5x the cost of a meal that you can produce to a higher standard yourself? It's not as if cooking a Sunday roast or steak dinner is arduous.

I go out to socialise with friends, i love eating out, i was out twice last week but i usually meet some old friends once a month for a get together and we have a meal.

The places we go are value for money, we've sussed out the rip off merchants ! My local pub does 2 meals for £10.99 during the week, that includes roast dinners and the other usual pub grub. I don't mind pushing the boat out occasionally though, you're not paying just for the food, there are all the other costs to cover in a restaurant. I don't begrudge them that, they're running a business after all.

I love cooking and i cook from scratch, i can't stand ready made meals but i also love eating out.

I've just come back from France and almost every type and aspect of food there is more expensive than here. Ironically, it IS the small, independent restaurants there that offer the best VFM compared to here, where so much of that price level is dominated by chains, now.

But the UK does cheap food much better than France (maybe because the French are not interested cheap food?) .

I have relatives that live in France. When they are in the UK, they bring home loads of store cupboard stuff like tinned tomatoes and pulses, stock cubes, fish. Cleaning and washing stuff and paracetamol. As these are cheaper here. Her daughter, who lives here, drives to her parents with similar items. My relatives do cater for 12 plus people most weekends as friends visit.

Their daughter and SIL will be staying with them over Christmas and bring down things which are unobtainable in France for Christmas.

Eating out is still a treat for many people: I could understand this in the era of meat-and-two veg, but these days what's available in the supermarket is far more interesting.

When you've had as many sub-standard meals out as I have, you just don't bother! Veggie food seems a puzzle to many "chefs" and is not that expensive to DIY with good results.

"Veggie" food needs spice and imagination.
I am a bit of a carnivore, as you have probably guessed, but if I had to turn "Veggie", then most of the food would be Indian influenced, with subtle spices, onion and garlic, and tasty rice dishes partnered with freshly baked flatbreads and cooling side dishes and pickles.

Saturday curry night for us and noticed Aldi had some short date fresh naan breads in the fridges so picked up a pack of garlic and coriander.

They were far better than the long date products in the ambient aisle.

Picked up one the new lamb joints in Aldi last week. It's only £2.79 I think and is absolutely delicious! Plenty meat for 2-3 people if you're on a budget or a substantial meal for one for the carnivores out there :D

Are those frozen? Sounds like a bargain, could you say what the packaging says?

No, they're fresh. I've binned the packaging now but you can find them in the fresh meat dept. I do recall they were 300g joints if that helps.

The freshness and quality of the asparagus, chestnut mushrooms and curly kale in my local Aldi today was exceptional.

In an attempt to prime myself for Brexit-style trading down, I tried the Aldi value breakfast wheat biscuits. They are small, compact and harder than most and I would imagine would not take to cold milk kindly. Not the best with hot milk either, but okay if you're not fussed about what you eat.

On the plus side, it could put me off Weetabix and its generic versions forever! Worth it if I beat my carbohydrate cravings :D
