Your landline or mobile provider should inform you of their Access Charge for calls to 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers. It should be located in a prominent place alongside the cost of calling 01 and 02 landline numbers, non-geographic 03 numbers, 071-075 and 077-079 mobile numbers and 070 personal numbers. If they fail to do so, make a complaint to Ofcom.

The organisation you are calling must declare their Service Charge in close proximity to wherever they advertise their telephone number. If they fail to do so, then make a complaint. For 084 numbers, complain to ASA. For 087 and 09 numbers, complain to PhonepayPlus.

    Plusnet:

    Service Numbers beginning 084, 087, 09 and 118

Calls to these numbers consist of an access charge set by Plusnet (9.58p) and a service charge set by the organisation you are calling. There is no setup fee for calls to these numbers.

It appears that Plusnet has deliberately decided to confuse the reader. The changes do away with landline and mobile providers publishing big tables of numbers.

Each landline and mobile provider is required to state their Access Charge and the organisation you are calling is required to state their Service Charge adjacent to their number.

Where telecoms providers fail to state their Access Charge, it becomes a matter for Ofcom. Where service providers fail to state their Service Charge, it becomes a matter for ASA (084) or PhonepayPlus (087 and 09).

Be aware that the codes 'SC1' etc in that list were dreamed up by Plusnet and do not match up with similar codes dreamed up by other providers, especially those for the last dozen or so of the 80 price bands.

Once you have the Access Charge from your telecoms provider and the Service Charge from the organisation you are about to call, you can calculate the call cost here:

I typed 101 into saynoto0870.com find an alternative number - it reported as no number found.
This particular bug wasn't fixed until last month (December 2015) as until then no-one had reported this bug to the owner of the site.

Once reported, the bug was fixed within 48 hours.

Previously you had to type in a number that started with a '0' and was followed by either nine or ten digits. Now you can also type in '101'.

If you haven't read this article recently, now would be a good time to catch up with the latest information.

The situation with non-geographic numbers Is now very much different to how things were even just a year or two ago.
