This is an amazing thread with an incredible wealth of information by thrifty 'old style' MoneySavers.
As you will see it already runs for hundreds of pages (see above right to navigate through them). So much so, you'll find when you get to the end that it's now been joined by Preparing for Winter II. As it's an open forum, some of the posts are chatty, others are full of information. Scroll through and see what you find (you can add your thoughts too if you register (it's free) and click reply at the bottom of the new Preparing for Winter II discussion).
Now enough from me let's get back to this thread - thanks to Hapless for starting it

Ok...so I know it's still August, but it won't be long until winter arrives.
So are you preparing? Whether it's a mild wet winter with flooding or a long cold winter with snow..
What we have done so far is....

Ok...so I know it's still August, but it won't be long until winter arrives.
So are you preparing? Whether it's a mild wet winter with flooding or a long cold winter with snow..
What we have done so far is....
- Sweep the Chimneys and clean out the grates fully, repairing any cracks with fire cement.
- Sort out the snuggly duvets ready to go to the cleaners.
- Check the winter wardrobes, who needs what in the way of coats, jumpers, boots, slippers, wooly socks etc.
- Ordered a generator so when we get the inevitable power cuts we can at least keep the freezer going.
- Make sure we have some nice heavy thick curtains for the windows and doors (our double glazing is a council special...crap)
- Make sure we have enough wood stocked up for the rayburn and fireplace.
- Order in extra coal before summer prices end on 31st August. Don't use much but it makes a good fire base.
- Make a checklist of seeds to prepare for spring planting
- Order Yule tree
- Ensure we have enough cold and flu, cough mixes, Calpol, prescription meds in the house.
- Get some dried essentials in, milk, egg, flour.
- Make sure we have some 5lt water containers (burst pipes happen a lot round here)
- Get the sewing machine out for draught excluder repair, remake.
- Ensure we have a stock of candles, batteries etc (see power cuts)
- Replace the normal energy saver lightbulbs with daylight energy saver bulbs
- Make sure the car is has petrol and we have de-icer, path saltgrit, etc.
- Ask Skadi to send SNOW this Yule:rotfl:

15. Replace the normal energy saver lightbulbs with daylight energy saver bulbs.
I Googled these and they look like a good idea. Where's the best place to buy them? They seem pretty expensive.

Funny you should mention winter and Yule as my OH was talking about Christmas presents and whether I'll be cooking a goose or a turkey last night -most unusual for him to be thinking ahead. I think it's the miserable weather. I love the period between back to school and year's end -all the planning and squirreling away nice things to eat. My plans always seem to centre around food. This autumn/late summer I shall be making;
sweetcorn relish
bread and butter pickles
damson chutney
damson gin
qunice cheese
quince vodka
stewed or pureed fruit for the freezer
Christmas/Yule cake
mincemeat

I have made some blackberry vodka
I will have to bottle the banana and the tea and raisin wine

Congratulations to you organised people...have done nothing yet, but plan on trying to dry some apple slices when my cookers are ripe!
