A friend of mine has asked if I could sell a large wall canvas for him on Ebay.
Yes, that's not really a poblem.
The poblem comes when it needs posting off to the buyer.
How would I wrap it?
Which courier is best?
Size, about 48" x 16"
Value.. Estimate at £300
Not a simple canvas, a hand printed one.

Firstly, never ever sell for a friend - there are far too many things that can go wrong. If your friend is determined this needs to go on ebay help him sell it himself through his own account. For a start when do you give him the money, do you wait until the time for any SNAD is past, what happens with a chargeback , what happens if it is damaged or buyer returns it? Also people unfamiliar with ebay always get shocked by the fees and may well decide you are taking them for a ride. What happens if you get a defect for late arrival or poor feedback as buyer doesn't like it?
ideally for a courier you need a packed size, most art is sent crated via specialist couriers who have full insurance and again you may need to balance the risk of using a non specialist courier and I think Parcelforce have quite large size limits against the costs of a specialist.

Agree with the above - help your friend set up an eBay account, but NEVER sell on your account for a friend!! It is not worth it!
Why not try selling it first on a local Facebook group? Gumtree? Schpock? These can then be a cash on collection sale.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')

Will your friend still be your friend when 180 days after the sale date you find out the buyer doesn't want the item and has filed a claim to say it was damaged on arrival? You will have to pay the buyer back, will your friend pay you back?
Worse still, you could wait 6 years and find out the buyer has made a chargeback on their card and Paypal have reversed the funds.
Imagine that.
Do as pink and soolin suggest and help your friend open his/her own accounts.0 -
You could offer it as 'collection only'. Make sure you stress in the listing that the buyer will need a vehicle big enough to take the item!0

If OP decides to offer collection only then they need to read the sticky thread about the issues. My last 2 collection only items went wrong and others have reported the same, one of mine had to be cancelled (I risked the address issue) as buyer just kept messing me around. The second one argued back and forth about using paypal and I only got away with that one as I had stated clearly that whilst I was happy to take paypal (as per ebay rules) then I would have to post it and had included the courier charge in my listing as well, and ebay said that was acceptable. If they wished to opt to collect it then I would take cash. Fair point - I was speaking as an e-bay buyer, not a seller. I've bought a fair few bits of dolls house miniatures from e-bay (if you think these are 4 year old girl's toys, just have a look!) and have been tempted by more than one actual dolls' house, but these are always offered as 'collection only' due to their size and fragility - and the one's I've fancied have always been too far away.0 -

You are quite correct in that collection is a perfectly acceptable way to sell on ebay and for quite a few things is the only real way of selling something, however from a seller's point of view it can be fraught with danger. Paypal is still shown as the preferred option and whilst many buyers are perfectly happy to go and view and pay cash, some prefer the supposed 'protection' of paypal. Sellers accepting paypal can face real issues when an item s collected, and if they try and refuse it then different issues arise.
As for dolls houses, a lady on a group I am a member of and who is in Canada posted up a colonial style dolls house , very old and absolutely gorgeous and very very detailed and the quality was astounding. I can well believe it! I stick to a budget (usually) but there are companies out there who specialise in fabulous miniatures - a dinner service for £500, a cabinet for over £1K, etc etc. They've been trading for some time, so they must get the business!0 -
Canvas picture are probably the most arkward items to send and get there without damage.
Combine that with Ebay & selling on behalf of a friend, probably the worst combo ever!
If you gonna ship totally insure it. Only takes the slightest force into the box and it's canvas ripped!
Don't sell for a friend or even family member. I learnt that last year selling something for my Dad. Then buyer opened a dispute etc. In the end I just ended up picking up tab being out of pocket for a quiet life.0
