Benefits for 16-17 year old.

Friends son was doing apprenticeship with 1 day a week, day release at college. He was recently let go by employer. He is due to have operation on arm in a month or so which would incapacitate him for approx 6 weeks.

Any ideas what, if any, benefits he/parents can claim both pre and post operation? Parents are on low income around 16k and currently receive CTC/WTC for other child in FTE.

    If he registers with Connexions then his parents will be able to claim extended CB for him for a period (not sure how long). He can't claim any unemployment benefits at this age. Is he carrying on at college?

    I don't know if he can without the apprenticeship. I think they are looking into getting him onto a full time course but probably not until after the op.

    When he is unable to work he will be able to claim Employment and Support Allowance.

    But won't she lose the CB and CTC if he does this? If he registers with Connexions she'll keep it.

    Yes but I got the impression that they already had lost CB and CTC and were not going to register with Connexions.
