it tells you on aer lingus website that children under the age of 16 can travel to the republic without a passport as long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
You need to be careful how they are using the word guardian, legally I think a guardian is someone other that a child's parent who have taken over parental responsibility for that child e.g. in the event of their death. If they use this definition they may not class 'other adults' as guardians. I suggest you phone them to confirm before a flight is booked.

I'm not sure if it depends on the airline you are flying with. We are going with Ryanair and they accept a valid photo driving licence (including provisional) as valid id

For years my mate's dad used to get on Aer Lingus with a fork lift truck drivers license (no Irish jokes please :D )
He had a real shock when he caught Ryanair and they wouldn't let him on......

Legally, you need some sort of photo ID - check with the ferry company for their specific requirements, but Ireland simply requires some sort of photo ID (can be as little as a bus pass) for their frontier controls.

If you use your driving license with Easyjet does anyone know if you need both parts or is it just the photo part.

    Thanks.
  • we are going to ireland in july by ferry but neither of our two children (5 & 3) have a passport and my partners has just expired. what kind or ID do we need for our children and is my partner still ok to use his drivers license as ID. Last thing i want is to get there and get turned away.

You need ID acceptable to the ferry company - best check with them. (the Irish authorities don't care)

Accompanied children do not normally require ID. The only exception I know of is Ryanair.
