You should always get your passport before you book any holiday.

At this time of year applications have previously risen at people get ready for their holidays. So if they say 6 weeks you should allow 6 weeks, if you get it in 4 its a bonus.

I booked the holiday last September so no point wasting a year on the passports.

On the other hand, I have had almost a year to sort it out!
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D

You can also renew about 6 months before the passport runs out and they add the remaining time onto your new passport.

The woman in the post office said that they select people at random for the interviews and not everyone has them, is this right? Hopefully we might be lucky!

Just read that ALL first time applicants will be interviewed.

My son had a child passport so should be ok -
    Who needs to be interviewed?

Only adults who have never before had a British passport in their own name need to attend an interview.
If you had your own passport as a child you will not need an interview, as your application is classed as a renewal. If you did not have a passport as a child (or were only ever included on a parent’s passport) you will need to attend an interview.

It's usually naturalised adult British citizens who are interviewed.

For anyone still wondering, here is my experience of applying for a first full adult passport...

I haven't been away since 2005 and previously I was on my mums passport as a child under 16.
Applied for my first adult passport on Tuesday last week and was told I would need to send the previous passport I was named on and my birth certificate. When I asked at the Post Office they assured me only 10% of applicants get invited for an interview. Baring in mind IPS had proof of who I was through my mums previous passport and my mum and dad's current passport, I was very surprised to receive a letter today telling me I needed to go for an interview. Luckily, I was able to get an interview in 6 days time at the London Elephant & Castle office and was told the interview should take a maximum of 30 minutes. I would say it seems that ALL people who apply for a first passport must now attend an interview.
I have booked a trip away for the end of September but I was assured that once I have had my interview the passport would be with me within 10 days.
So based on those calculations, from the day I sent off my application to when I should receive it at the latest, it only takes about 3-4 weeks to receive your passport with an interview, and technically it's still the peak period.
    Hope that helps :)

Slightly nervous about my interview as I always fail my telephone banking security questions! Will let you know what I got asked and when the passport actually did arrive (I read it only took 2 days after the interview for one person - fingers crossed)

If you are aged 15 years and under - you do not need an interview - if you are an adult (16 up to 80 years of age) and it is your first passport - you have never had you your own passport and post office passports do not count, you need an interview. If you were born before 2.9.1929, you do not need an interview and your passport is free of charge.

Their long term target is to interview 100% of 1st time applicants and 100% of renewals were the applicant has not previously been interviewed. The latter is designed to catch people who got the 1st passport 'illegally'.

She just smiled and signed it all off! Wot a farce, but he got it so I'm not complaining! Think its more to see if u seem to be the person u say u r.

    Don't worry bout it. U'll b fine

If he speaks / writes like you probably best if he doesn't get a passport as we don't want the likes of you showing us up abroad.
