Full time education defined

Hi Folks I'm trying to get some clarity on what full time education is? My daughter is 17 and attending FE College to do an NVQ level 2 in Beauty Therapy. This course runs for 36 weeks, 11 hours per week. The college say it is a Full time course, however the CSA and Child Maintenance Options state that full time education is defined as that "on average the child is in class at least 12 hours per week". My daughter is working too and bringing in approx £150 a month. Am I still liable to pay Child Support. (I have been paying it regularly and on time without fail for the last 10 years).
Cheers

  • Is the course definately 11 hours a week? How have you checked this?
Overactively underachieving for almost half a century
  • Yes defo 11 hours a week, however the college say that the full time and part time courses are different in that:
16-18 year old's do a full time course 11 hours a week beauty therapy and 6 hours English and Maths if they do not have GCSE (she has both so no need to do the English and Maths).
Part time course is 11 hours a week.
I have checked this with the College and their website clearly states 11 hours a week.

Is your daughter's resident parent still able to claim child benefit whilst your daughter is on the course.

I'd have thought if the course qualifies for CB then you would still need to pay maintenance.

    I've helped Parliament
If your child is working 24 hrs or more then child benefit ceases

It also mentions education having to be for 12-13 hours here-

    https://www.gov.uk/child-benefit-16-19

The CMS will probably not do anything unless child benefit stops so you may need to contact child benefit directly.
  • Thanks thats very useful information. Ill check on the CB issues.

I work in FE - although the Beauty programme states 11 hours, the college is required to make up a full time programme of 600 hours over the year to include the main vocational course, English and Maths (if required), along with enrichment and work experience. If this doesn't happen then the college isn't funded for that student as a full time student. It's likely that the college isn't listing the full breakdown of the course, just the Beauty hours actually relevant to the qualification.
Our level 2 students are in college around 14 hours a week and this is industry standard currently.
  • I think that in each college the full course is determined in its own way, in general with this question you will better turn to a qualified specialist who works here, I think he will help you and consult you.
