University/Age 63/£?

Discussion in the pub the other day. Can you go to Uni at 63 with a Goverment Grant of £9k ? pa. "You will never have to pay it back as you do not earn more than £15k pa"
Would be nice to do a degree. Would funds be available at this age ? Up to what amount and for what purpose (eg living expenses as well !). Would any of this be means tested ?

Just a thought, though maybe ........

Any ideas please

AFAIK age isn't a barrier to student finance, but residence and whether or not you've had any before may be.

Work your way through these pages.

Looks as if you won't get maintenance loan if you're over 60, just your fees paid.
    Your age
There’s no upper age limit for tuition fee loans or grants. To apply for a Maintenance Loan you have to be under 60 at the start of the course.

There's no age limits for the tuition fee loans but no maintenance funding is available for over 60s. The threshold for repayment is now £21,000 and someone with pension income over this amount would repay 9% of any income over this, just like anybody else.

Good news for those just under 60, though.

Also I believe full time students don't have to pay council tax, which could be a huge saving.

Depends who they are living with.

If everyone in the house is a f/t student, nothing to pay.

If it's a couple and only one of them is a f/t student, single person discount.

If more than two people are in the house and only one of them is a f/t student, no discount.

I realise that by the age of 60+ most people are either living alone or in more or less contentended couple-dom, but other living arrangements are possible, and sometimes the children never leave ... or come back!
