Good websites for finding tradespeople

Which websites do you find best for finding good and cheap trades persons?

A colleague showed me one which looked good last year - it had traders signed-up who gave quotes - but we've both lost its name.

Thank you!

Good tradesmen aren't cheap and cheap tradesmen aren't good.

    Facebook.

Seriously, if you have a local community Facebook page, ask on there for personal recommendations. Word of mouth from trusted friends and neighbours is by far the best way to find a decent tradesperson. And as previously mentioned, Good may not mean Cheap. There's a difference between a "cheap" price for a job and a "reasonable" price.

Expensive ones are not always good, either.

If it's a small job you could risk it and use a site like Rated People or Checkatrade. People you get from here may well be reluctant to give you any paperwork, and you may not even have their trading address.

Which Trusted Traders is better as traders sign up to a mediation service if anything goes wrong, and Which check things like their insurance.

What sort of job do you need to be done, and what area are you in? Folks on here may be able to recommend someone they have used.

I've never been accused of being cheap. I have been accused a number of times of being the best though.

Agreed, although if they're cheap alarm bells should start ringing immediately.

I thought I gave the OP some useful advice. You can have cheap or you can have good, but the two are mutually exclusive.

    It's school holidays.

OP it depends on what you want doing. Most trades have a governing body which has a register of it's members.

After recent experience, I'm not sure I would look at the internet. Personal recommendations would be much better.

Whatever it's an absolute pain. We've embarked on doing the house/garden up and we have so many "tradesmen" who have failed to turn up, not sent quotes in, upped their estimates after given go ahead, The wild west comes to mind.
