    I read that if you were to break up the company and sell everything off the you would get about £4.00 a share.

    Its closer to £10 a share of assets in theory I think. Even that probably undervalues them since they own gigantic reserves of oil which at the present price would be worth maybe a trillion before costs, the numbers are silly

    All the oil companies are undervalued, its pretty weird because there is little chance of $30 oil long term from what I see. Ten years ago it was $10 ?

    Do you own a good mix of oil and gas shears?
    I have to admit that BP are the first oil shears that i had ever owned. iv never looked at that sector before in any real detail.

    I have a few but on such a massive company and industry Im not sure I have a good mix. I dont intend to hold bp long term but I own them for the moment, I've had shell for over a year.
    I own iraqi, india and somalia oil explorers also which are about as clear as oil on their long term value. Risk appetite is rising right now I think its fair to say so BP could do ok still. 500 is my target for the moment

    Oil price itself is higher then its been for a while. Today and this week is a bit of a pivot in economic expectations, I suspect further falls really


    Right this moment BP has retraced 38% of its fall from grace, 476 would be a half way recovery

    Im sure a lot of people have mentioned Halifax's excellent execution only share delaing service- I have used it for nearly five years and am a big fan- pretty simple, provides some market research, kept me up to date on all corporate notifications and commision is usually around £11.95 each trade.

    Sometimes think people get a little too caught up in how much execution costs, when a really high level of service is an important calming influence in the mind of the investor. Of course costs matter more if you were trading very regularly, but for the sort of Benjamin Grahjam value investing approach, i think halifax's services are pretty damn good.

    Incidentally if anyone is interested in reading more on value investing i found a pretty decent site the other day- fairly simple and easyish to understand: goodvalueshares.com

    I have a certificate for GEC shares and i now find that the company no longer exists! What do i do with my share certificate, also i have british aerospace 7.45/5 2000/2003 loan stock which apparently was redeemed in november 2003 - i have no idea what this means, i also have shares in Lloyds but no certificate and a Share Allocation Statement from Birmingham Midshires for 400 preference shares but no idea what to do with this either, can anyone advise please?

    WOW! where have you been?
    GEC no longer exists, you should have received some BAe shares as a result of their passing, plus a cheque.
    Lloyds are now owned by most of us as taxpayers but if you havent got a certificate you should contact their registrar to establish your shares.
    Birm. Mid. B/S has been taken over by Santander Bank, but no compensation was paid to existin investors, so it looks like theses shares are worth nowt.
    Trying to learn something new every day.

    I think I had shares in midshires at one point a while ago, not held for long though
    In 1999, the Birmingham Midshires Building Society agreed to a takeover bid from the Royal Bank of Scotland. However the deal collapsed when Halifax plc tabled a more lucrative offer. Halifax itself became a part of HBOS plc when it merged with the Bank of Scotland in 2001. In 2007, it became a division of Bank of Scotland plc following a reorganisation in the HBOS Group.
