Cheaper alternative?
Hi,
I'm trying to find a cheaper alternative to the following:
Vitax Nippon Killer (search Amazon for it, as the site won't let me post a link to it :S)
It has worked really well - but each sachet you only get about a couple of meters squared for a decent effectiveness. I'd much prefer to buy a pint/liter of something - that would get rid of ant6s just as well?
TIA
Andy

Does the product being organic important to you?:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.0 -

Are you trying to clear your garden of ants?
I don't think you'll ever succeed if that's the case - more ants will just move into the space you've created for them.0 -
Hi,
Thanks for the quick repliesAre you trying to clear your garden of ants?
Kinda. I'm more concerned about the grass, and my allotment section, and greenhouse. The red ants are killing all the plants in my greenhouse, by setting up nest in the pots they are in And yes, I'm aware of the ongoing battle with the little blightersDoes the product being organic important to you?
Not too fussed TBH. The main thing, is that if I use them on the soil in the greenhouse - it won't affect the eatability of the produce (I tend to apply it just on the soil directly, but obviously I'm aware that it can get absorbed into the plant + crops)
TIA

If you absolutely can't learn to live with them -
http://www.grassclippings.co.uk/grassclippings/2012/07/controlling-ants-in-your-lawn.html
"A pathogenic nematode, Steinernema feltiae, is available from some mail order suppliers of biological controls for treating ant nests in lawns and flower beds. The microscopic worm-like nematodes are watered into the soil in places where ants are bringing soil up onto the surface."
Of course, if you kill all the ants, you will have to live with all the bugs that the ants are currently eating.0 -
Awesome thanks I recon this should do the trick:

I guess for the price difference, it'd be worth getting the 250 million, as that'll do a wider area.Of course, if you kill all the ants, you will have to live with all the bugs that the ants are currently eating.
Cheers

Red ants are carnivorous - only the black ants farm aphids.
Ah ok - well they are still setting up nest in my pots Black ones I've kept reasonably under control with semolina - which works a charm. Doesn't do so well with the reds though, as they are not interested in it0 -
Mmm actually , not too sure how practical these worm things are going to be at this time of year:It is vital to apply to a moist lawn or border as the nematodes are unable to move in dry soils. Mix the nematodes in 2 litres of clean water, stir, dilute further to 20 litres and apply immediately using a watering can. Water again and keep the soil moist for 14 days.
UPDATE: Think I may give this a go: http://www.pestcontrolsupplies.co.uk/smite-organic-diatomaceous-earth-powder-1kg0
