Share dealing account for non-resident

Is there any legal reason why a UK non-resident (a British national, lived in UK for a long time but overseas for a few years now) cannot open a share-dealing account in the UK? The person concerned has a UK family address that can be used with the account for all correspondence. Most, if not all, application forms are asking you to confirm that you are a UK resident; what is the consequence of ticking this when actually a non-resident?
