Alternatives to Royal Mail?

With all the strikes that are going on at the moment, I am wondering if there is a cheaper (or at least more efficient) alternative to Royal Mail for small packages and letters. I'm so sick of things going amiss or not receiving items for weeks.

Can anyone recommend a good, reliable, not to expensive service?

Guide to alternatives to Royal Mail. But basically its going to cost so its probably better to wait till after the strike.

There are courier services on ebay and we have a thread here somewhere about the offers, but you are looking at a minimum of about £6 an item and you'd need to stay at home all day as you don't get a guaranteed collection time.

Realistically there is no alternative to RM for basic routine mail unless you want a much dearer service.

I'm building up a list of them over on http://www.rubbishroyalmail.co.uk

You can see the 'alternatives' forum here.

Unfortunately, as soolin points out, there is no realistic alternative to Royal Mail for everyday letters.
    I hate Royal Mail!
