Hi everyone

This is my second time posting and I am loving the forum.

Heres my story.

In 2009 I moved into a rented 2 bed flat with a flat mate.
I hadn't paid my gas/electricity bill for a while and after probably about a year I
decided to do something about it.

My flatmate contacted them and we agreed to make monthly payments with the account solely in my name. I don't think the bill was up to £700 at the time. This was probably 2010/early 2011

We were making the payments fine when out of the blue an updated bill
of around £2000 maybe more came through the letter box.

My response to that was to stick my head in the sand and not continue
with the previous arrangements.
I was a student, battling with depression and severe anxiety, without a job struggling to pay my rent and keep up with
other bills.

Fast-forward to 2016 (after two episodes of depression, finally graduating, job hunting, marriage and all round growing up
and getting responsible) I decide to work on my credit.

British gas had placed a default on my account February of last year (2015)

Can they wait for that long to do that?
Will the statute of limitation apply?
How much worse can things get?

Hopefully someone will confirm for you but defaults are normally placed 3-6months after you defaulted on payments. I'm no expert and difficult to know the dates but I think most would agree, that you should be able to dispute a default, that was placed 4 years after the account originally defaulted....Only thing I'm not sure about is if those repayments you made, under the agreed repayment plan would have reset the clock on that default but either way, I would dispute the default date British Gas have set....

Hopefully some of the experts on here will confirm for you...

    Best of luck
